โ€‰โ€‰โ€‰
It's been a while since i've been on here but let me tell you... when i'm not sharing my love of vegan cooking, nutrition, self-healing & other spiritual bad-assery it literally feels like a piece of me is missing ๐Ÿ’”โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰โ€‰
But I also love playing music, reading, writing & other things, so I had to take a step back from social media to give those sides of my life some TLC & tend to my mental health ๐Ÿ’†๐Ÿพโ€โ™€๏ธโ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰โ€‰
Don't get me wrong - I LOVE running melanin in the kitchen, but with so many interests & a full-time job, it can be hard AF to be consistent without burning out ๐Ÿฅฒ โ€‰
โ€‰
Let alone keep up with sweet charles ๐Ÿถ, family, friends, the damn panorama, healing from ancestral trauma, this heavy ass collective energy, mercury gatorade, breaking these generational curses, doing my laundry or the dishes that have been in the sink for days - PHEWW, ya feel me?!?โ€‰๐Ÿคฏโ€‰๐Ÿ˜…

You mac me smile ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐ŸŒฑโ€‰
โ€‰
I need all the cozy vibes tonight as nyc gets a bit chilly ๐Ÿฅถ โ€‰
โ€‰
So having a simple snack of a mac & โ€œcheeseโ€ with sauce made โ€˜au naturalโ€™ from veggies & spices. Hold the oil, gluten, packaged cheese & dairy for endless healthy pastabilities ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿง€โ€‰
โ€‰
My cheesy cookbook had to go on hold because life got in the way, but itโ€™s making a return soon! Testing out some modified recipes due to my ever changing dietary lifestyle. โ€‰

Feeling green today at a quick lunch at ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅฐ๐ŸŒฑโ€‰
โ€‰
With multiple locations around Manhattan and Brooklyn, Westville has plenty of vegetarian & vegan friendly options ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพโ€‰
โ€‰
Highly recommend doing either a market vegetable side or a market plate, which gives you the option of choosing four out of twenty or so options of vegetarian & vegan forward side dishes. โ€‰
โ€‰
It makes me feel like Iโ€™m at thanksgiving dinner ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜… side dishes are a veganโ€™s best friend!โ€‰
โ€‰
Options include:โ€‰
๐ŸŒฑ kale with spinach, shallots & pumpkin seedsโ€‰
๐ŸŒฑ tofu topped with teriyaki sauce โ€‰
๐ŸŒฑ brussel prouts with honey Dijonโ€‰
๐ŸŒฑ yuca fries with chipotle mayoโ€‰
๐ŸŒฑ broccoli with garlic โ€‰
๐ŸŒฑ beets with walnutsโ€‰
๐ŸŒฑ green beans with soy glaze โ€‰
โ€‰
Today I opted for the refreshing mint lemonade and just one market side of the mixed mushrooms with leeks and herbs ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿคค๐Ÿฅฐโ€‰
โ€‰
What did you have for lunch today?! โœจ

Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you โœจ๐Ÿ˜˜ - Anne Lamott

Spent the last few days on a houseboat by the beach and have never felt better. Feel reinvigorated with a sense of mental & spiritual calmness, peace and serenity that Iโ€™ll be very strict about maintaining.

What do you do to unplug from the chaos of the world?

This is your friendly reminder toโ€‰...โ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
๐Ÿ’ฆ drink some water!!โ€‰โ€‰
- 8 glasses a day is recommended for healthy living and avoiding dehydrationโ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰
๐ŸŒž take a walk and get at least 20 minutes of sunshine today!โ€‰โ€‰
- it's the 2nd best way to detox your body (number one is fasting)โ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
๐Ÿ˜ get some love and attention! โ€‰
- pet a dog, call a friend, strike up a convo with a stranger. Itโ€™s good for your heart chakra! โ€‰
โ€‰
We are basically houseplants with more complicated emotions! ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ˜„โ€‰โ€‰โ€‰โ€‰

Self care looks different for everyone, but I think these three things can work wonders for everybody! Tag a friend who needs to be reminded of this today ๐Ÿฅฐ
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
As for me, my self care is going on a well-needed vacation and digital detox for the next few days, so will talk to you all on Sunday ๐Ÿ˜˜

Dreams do come true! ๐Ÿ˜‚
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
My favorite part about learning to cook definitely has to be the ability to make anything I'm craving.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
But let's be honest, it can also be a blessing and a curse ๐Ÿ˜…
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
When we were younger, our parents used to moderate our intake of healthy vs unhealthy foods.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
They'd say things like "no sweets before dinner", or "you had ice cream yesterday, you can't have that again today".
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
But when we become adults, many of us fall into unhealthy eating patterns because we've never had to create that balance for ourselves.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
That's why learning to keep track of what and when you eat certain foods is soo important when you're on a health journey.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
When I first became conscious of what I was eating, I would keep an app or a notepad to keep track of what I ate everyday.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Furthermore, I'd keep track of how that food made me f e e l after eating it.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
This helped me understand which foods weren't resonating well with my body.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
After a few weeks I'd look into my notepad and be like "wow! every time i eat takeout from that one place, I wind up feeling super bloated afterwards".
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
It sucks to come to that realization if it's a favorite meal, but giving your body foods it likes is self-love โ™ฅ๏ธ
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Many of us are used to going through life eating foods and not realizing the ailments we face are a direct result of that intake.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Starting to eat consciously means being more mindful about how our bodies react to the foods we eat. And this differs from person to person! We all have a different set of bodily properties that affect us on an individual level, which is why it's super important that you own your own health journey.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Have you ever noticed a consistent bad reaction after eating something? Did you wind up taking it out of your diet? ๐Ÿ˜๐ŸŒฑ

My favorite part about Saturday's is going to the Farmers Market! ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€๐ŸŒพ
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Have you ever thought about how fresh veggies get into your local restaurants & supermarkets? ๐ŸงBy farmers!
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Farmers go through all sorts of economic, physical, & mental stress to grow & transport the foods we eat for daily survival.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
They bring their veggies all over town to ensure we always have what we need without even thinking about it.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Buying from local farmers markets have huge benefits:
๐ŸŒฑYou can reduce your carbon footprint! Often times the veggies you see at your supermarket have traveled more than 1,000 miles, which puts a huge toll on emissions from large transport trucks and refrigeration. At farmers markets, the average distance is less than 50 miles.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐ŸŒฑThey're fresher! Produce is brought to market the same day or within a day of picking.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐ŸŒฑThey have more flavor! Fruits and veggies are picked when ripe for the market, vs at the supermarket they're often transported across country and picked before they are ripe to account for the travel time.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐ŸŒฑYou get a much larger variety! I've had the opportunity to try so many new veggies I've never even seen at supermarkets. Variety is the spice of life!
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐ŸŒฑYou can talk to the farmer! Since they're the ones growing the product, you can ask anything. I love getting recipe recommendations from farmers and info about where & how it was grown.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐ŸŒฑMany farmers don't use pesticides! Pesticides are chemicals that are harmful to human health, but unfortunately many farmers use these in order to extend the shelf life of veggies that need extra transport time. You can always ask the farmer if they use pesticides on their plants.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐ŸŒฑYou can support small, family operated farms vs big business!
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €

Some of my favorite perks of work from home life are captured in this picture:โ€‰โ€‰
๐Ÿ‘ฃ taking walks during meetings vs sitting down at a desk all dayโ€‰โ€‰
๐ŸŒž getting more sun vs sitting in harsh fluorescent lights โ€‰โ€‰
๐Ÿถ more hang out time with sweet Charley vs leaving her at homeโ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
Also not pictured is the ability to make my own meals at my leisure. I don't use microwaves, so I would always have to default to bringing yet another cold salad or buying expensive takeout. โ€‰
โ€‰
Some days like today I can't contain the amount of privilege and gratitude I have to be fortunate enough to work from home.โ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
Throughout college, I was on my feet all day waitressing & bartending. โ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
Then when I graduated and got into digital marketing, I switched to sitting at a desk all day in office settings. That's the work mode I've been in for the past six years now. โ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
While there were high and low aspects of both jobs, what I remember always wishing I had more of was not feeling contained in a box all day. โ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
Before COVID, working from home even just once was like.. the most difficult effing thing in the world to negotiate thx to capitalist culture of "if I don't see you, you're not working" ๐Ÿ™„โ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
But it always wreaked so much havoc on my soul. โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
I love being outside, I love the sun on my face, I love long walks, meeting random people on the street and having a sense of variety and breaks throughout the day. โ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
At the same time, there are some aspects of in-person work life that I miss - like the fun water cooler banter and getting to know colleagues. โ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
Some days it feels like I've swapped out the office box for the home box, so I can still get cabin fever. I'm ambiverted, so I get energized by people but also need ample time to recharge and ground myself in solitude. โ€‰
โ€‰
I've noticed a difference between extroverted personalities and introverted personalities and their preference for work mode. โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
What has the difference in work modes done for your life? Are you able to work from home or are you going into the workplace daily? Do you prefer working from home, a hybrid model? Would love to hear about your experiences in this sea of change we've been in ๐Ÿค—

Patience, vibes and a great playlist are all me and an evening need to make a few easy-to-grab meals for the next few days ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพโ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
Some people think meal prepping creates restriction, but for me, it couldn't be more opposite.โ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
Sure, it takes a few hours out of my day, but the time and headache that is relieved over the next few days is priceless ๐Ÿ’†๐Ÿพโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’…๐Ÿพโ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
I don't plan out to the day or time I'll eat my meals, but there's something so comforting in opening my fridge to see that I have:โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
๐ŸŒฑ chunky chili (for soups and chili fries)โ€‰
๐ŸŒฑ bbq "pulled pork" jackfruit for sandwichesโ€‰(pictured here! ๐Ÿคค)โ€‰
๐ŸŒฑ Chinese-style fried rice & eggrollsโ€‰โ€‰
๐ŸŒฑ hummus and sliced veggiesโ€‰โ€‰
๐ŸŒฑ macaroni saladโ€‰โ€‰
(to name a few) in the fridge ready to eat whenever I please ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿคคโ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
This means I'm less likely toโ€‰โ€‰
๐Ÿฅฒ feel overwhelmed trying to fit cooking and cleaning into my busy 9-5 scheduleโ€‰โ€‰
๐Ÿ’ธ waste money by ordering take out because it's 'easier/faster' (those $10 meals add the f*$ # up!)โ€‰๐Ÿคค over eat, because I separated my meals into already defined portion sizesโ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
Another tip is I donโ€™t always meal prep on Sundayโ€™s ๐Ÿงโ€‰
โ€‰
Sure itโ€™s convenient for the Monday-through Friday week. But some days, like yesterday, I had an evening free of activities and want to clear my weekend to do other things ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿพโ€‰
โ€‰
So I recommend not feeling tied to only making your meals on the weekend.โ€‰
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ€‰
Have you tried meal preppjng your meals in bulk? What are your favorite tips and tricks?! If you're not a fan, why aren't you and what would you like to learn to do better?! โ™ฅ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜๐ŸŒฑ
