Story
Wires Glasses is an independent eyewear brand that aims to change how eyewear is made and worn. Handcrafted from a single piece of stainless steel wire and 3D printed rims, Wires are designed to be kept for life.
The first pair of Wires were born out of necessity, not a design brief.
In 2016, when London-based designer Yair Neuman found himself in need of sunglasses for a holiday, he decided not to buy ones, but to make them himself. Using materials he had on hand, he took a piece of soft wire to create the frame and 3D printed some rims in his studio. Soon after, Neuman was joined by co-founders Lily Cole and Kwame Ferreira, and Wires Glasses was born.
The spirit of improvisation and resourcefulness behind Wires Glasses was inspired by Neuman’s admiration for African wire artistry, a centuries-old practice in which artisans repurpose wire to make products, toys or art. Soon after creating his first pair, Neuman put together a team of experts in Harare, Zimbabwe, who began to produce handcrafted frames from copper and brass wire for the first collection, Wires 1.0. These frames were then shipped to the UK to be fitted with 3D printed rims in Wires Glasses’ London studio. The combination represented an elegant mix of tradition and technology, of learned artistry with futuristic design methods.
