Why Forest Schools Improve Mental Health
Forest schools are nature-based, child-led educational settings that emphasize long-term outdoor engagement. Here's why they are particularly beneficial for mental health:
Promote Resilience and Self-Esteem
The autonomy and exploration in forest schools foster problem-solving, confidence, and resilience (O'Brien & Murray, 2007).
Emotional and Social Development
Forest school environments encourage cooperation, empathy, and emotional regulation, supporting children's socio-emotional learning and reducing behavioral issues.
Restorative Effects of Nature
Based on Attention Restoration Theory and Stress Recovery Theory, being in nature helps children recover from mental fatigue and stress, improving overall mood and mental clarity (Kaplan & Kaplan, 1989).
Support for Neurodivergent Learners
Forest schools offer multi-sensory, movement-rich environments that can be especially calming and beneficial for children with sensory processing differences, ADHD, or autism (Knight, 2011).
Every homeschooler deserves a little help.
We’ve built the village so you don’t have to go it alone.
