This time span can vary from a day to a month depending on the type of treatment received, your lifestyle and exercise habits.

People with high levels of stress who push their bodies to their limits will likely feel the positive effects of their massage fading more quickly.

Those in more restful surroundings will feel the effects for longer.

Those of us with physical imbalances or previous injuries will need more attention in the areas concerned.

The average person will feel the positive effects of a massage for about a week.

With new clients, I always ask a few questions to determine who they are, what their goals are and what treatment will suit them best. It's also easier for clients to give feedback on pressure etc if they're already talking.

With some clients this will develop into an hour long conversation on life, death and everything else.

Others respond more concisely and quieten down. Maybe even close their eyes.

As you may expect, most of us massage therapists are quite good at reading non verbal signals, and we will get the hint.

That said, if for any reason you would prefer a silent treatment and your therapist doesn't SSSSSSHHH... you can always say,

'I'd prefer a silent treatment today please.'

We will not be offended and you will get the session you need.

Nope. You do not have to bring a gum guard in order to benefit from a massage. It all depends on your comfort levels and desired outcome.

Benefits of massage that do not involve deep pressure:

Relieves stress & reduces anxiety
Better sleep quality
Promotes relaxation
Lowers blood pressure
Boosts immune function
Stimulates lymphatic fluid drainage
Improves skin tone and texture.

If you have adhesions, feelings of tightness in your muscles, restricted range of motion or muscle/joint pain and you are seeking deep tissue or remedial massage work to relieve those symptoms... Then it may get a little more uncomfortable at times.

It all depends on your desired outcome. The key is to communicate with your therapist to make sure you are getting what you want from your treatment.

This last weekend saw athletes testing themselves on the road and in the water.

The post event buzz might be fading so I'll just remind you: you did good. Well done!

If it was your first, your tenth, your best or your worst - Well done.

If you bombed and had to bail - Well done. It takes work to get to the start line. No one likes a DNF but it beats a DNS. Live to play another day.

I'm very excited to be seeing clients again.

Thank you to all of you special people for your assistance and patience during my healing season.

As much as I wish I had NOT broken ANY bones, this experience has shown me how much support I have from my clients, training buddies and fellow massage therapists.

You all had my back in a way I can never repay 💙

Frozen shoulder occurs when the capsule of connective tissue enclosing the shoulder joint thickens and tightens around the joint, restricting its movement.

While massage, unfortunately, will not have any direct effect on this thickened capsule, it can help to ease the tight muscles surrounding the joint.

If the joint can't move, the muscles can't move and muscles NEED to move to stay healthy.

I have a client living with this condition who has been seeing me weekly for the last month or so. After her massage she feels a respite in her constant discomfort and experiences a greater range of motion. I massage her entire back and both arms and shoulders and apply suction cups to the most affected muscles.

Although only one shoulder is 'frozen', as a result my client tends to use her other arm/shoulder for more than she used to (always sleeping on one side etc) so the entire upper body ends up under tension.

It is very satisfying to see her improvement after the session and I only wish it lasted for longer!

This is one of the best responses I've ever had to 'How are you feeling after your massage?'

I usually wait a couple of days before I follow up with clients who have had some intense work done because they often feel rather tender the next day and I prefer not to remind them who was responsible!

This client had such tight quads that I had told her that if she were to be served for dinner she would definitely have to go in the slow cooker for the day. Yes, the joke is a little dark - especially post Dahmer documentary - but my point was made.

We are made to move.

Movement encourages blood flow and blood carries oxygen and nutrients to- and removes waste from muscle tissue.

Massage also increases circulation.

Take stretch/walk breaks as often as you can.

Congratulations to all the runners who have stuck it out and pushed through the big mileage weeks in the darkest, coldest months.

I'm no elite athlete that's for sure, but I do like to set goals. Just by continuing to pitch up I have achieved a few.

I know the frustrations of training being hindered by injuries - niggles and tweaks are the worst!!

Regular massage helps to iron out the 'twinges' before they turn into the 'twangs' and 'pops' that will sideline you.

And it feels fantastic.

Don't neglect a good massage.

Massage helps to relieve nerve pressure and increases mobility and range of motion. This treatment can also help strengthen muscles, allowing them to function more effectively.

Our muscles support and move our joints, relay important messages from one part of the body to the brain to sequence precise muscular contractions, maintaining the body’s weight in various postures and positions. Imbalances in the muscle system create an abnormal joint position leading to increased friction in a joint, causing degenerative changes in joints and overload to other muscles, resulting in pain and muscle spasm.

For optimal health and performance you need to look after yourself correctly. To reap the rewards of excercise you need to allow your body to adapt.

Training stresses the body to ultimately make it stronger. Without recovery, training will just keep adding stress.

Refuel. Eat wholesome food and hydrate properly to give your body the material to rebuild.

Sleep. Enough quality sleep allows the body the time for this reconstruction.

Movement and massage have a similar goal - to get the blood pumping through your muscles. Blood supplies the tissues with nutrients and oxygen and removes metabolic waste allowing quicker recovery.

Refuel. Sleep. Move. And book a Massage.
