During seasonal transitions, muscles and joints are exposed to new stresses from changing surfaces, colder or warmer temperatures, and shifts in activity levels or training intensity. These changes can impact flexibility, balance, and overall performance, increasing injury risk if your body isn't prepared. Simple strategies like dynamic warm-ups, mobility work, targeted strength and stability exercises, and gradual progression in training volume can make a significant difference. Being proactive allows your tissues time to adapt safely while maintaining performance and endurance. At Island Sports Physical Therapy, we guide athletes and active individuals with personalized programs, movement assessments, and recovery strategies tailored to every season. Preparing now means fewer setbacks later—so you can stay strong, resilient, and ready to move confidently no matter the weather.

Rehab isn't one-size-fits-all, and it’s never random. Progressive rehabilitation is a structured, evidence-based approach that evolves as your body heals and adapts to new demands. Treatment begins with reducing pain, calming inflammation, and restoring mobility, then gradually advances to rebuilding strength, improving stability, enhancing balance, and retraining proper movement mechanics. As you improve, exercises become more dynamic and specific to your sport, job, or daily activities to ensure your body is truly prepared for real-world demands. Each phase builds on the last, allowing tissues to heal properly while safely increasing load and complexity. At Island Sports Physical Therapy, we intentionally progress your program based on your goals, performance, and response to treatment to reduce reinjury risk and maximize long-term results. Healing happens step by step — and smart progression is the key to coming back stronger and more confident than before.

Neck pain isn't just from screens or sports; it’s often both 📱🏀

Long hours looking down at phones or computers can strain the neck, while sports add impact, quick movements, and repetitive stress. Over time, this combination can lead to stiffness, pain, and reduced mobility.

At Island Sports Physical Therapy, we assess:

- Posture
- Movement Patterns
- Muscle Balance

These assessments address the root cause of neck pain. With targeted exercises, manual therapy, and sport-specific training, we help relieve pain and prevent it from coming back, so you can stay active and comfortable on and off the field.

Stability training helps your body control movement, protect joints, and respond safely to everyday and athletic demands. By strengthening the muscles that support your hips, knees, ankles, and core, stability exercises improve balance, coordination, and reaction time, key factors in injury prevention.

At Island Sports Physical Therapy, we use targeted stability training to reduce joint strain, improve movement efficiency, and help you stay active with confidence. Whether you're an athlete or just going about your daily life, a stable foundation keeps you safer and stronger.

Good posture is more than just standing up straight — it’s the foundation for how your body moves, feels, and performs each day. Poor alignment can lead to neck pain, back discomfort, headaches, and even decreased athletic performance. At Island Sports Physical Therapy, we help you build better posture habits that support long-term strength and mobility.

Start improving your posture today:

- Keep your ears aligned over your shoulders
- Draw your shoulder blades gently back and down
- Engage your core muscles while sitting and standing
- Take movement breaks every 30–60 minutes
- Adjust your workspace so your screen is at eye level

Small changes in alignment can make a big difference in how you feel. If you're dealing with stiffness or chronic discomfort, our team can assess your posture and create a personalized plan to get you moving and feeling your best.

Shoulder injuries are common in athletes, especially in sports that involve throwing, overhead movements, or repetitive motion. Preventing injury starts with strengthening the rotator cuff and shoulder stabilizers, which help support proper joint mechanics. A thorough warm-up with dynamic stretches and mobility exercises prepares muscles and joints for activity, while practicing proper technique reduces strain on tendons and ligaments. Monitoring training volume and resting when pain or fatigue appears is essential, as overuse is a leading cause of shoulder injuries. Consistent care, strengthening, and smart movement habits help athletes stay healthy and perform at their peak.

Great skating isn’t just about time on the ice; it’s also built off the ice. Off-ice strength training enhances power, balance, endurance, and control so you can skate faster, change direction quicker, and stay strong through every shift.🏒

Focusing on the muscles that support your hips, core, glutes, and legs helps improve stride length and stability while reducing injury risk. Building a well-rounded strength routine also improves posture and control, both on and off the ice.⛸️

At Island Sports Physical Therapy, we tailor programs to your sport and goals, helping athletes develop the strength and confidence needed to perform at their best.

Forward falls, slips, or trips can place the shoulder in a vulnerable position. When the arm reaches out to break a fall, the force can push the upper arm bone out of the shoulder socket, leading to pain, instability, and limited movement. Shoulder dislocations often cause sudden pain, difficulty lifting the arm, and a feeling that the joint is out of place. Without proper care, they can increase the risk of repeated injuries and long-term weakness.

Physical therapy plays an important role in recovery by restoring mobility, strengthening the muscles that stabilize the shoulder, and improving body control to reduce future fall risk. If you’ve experienced a fall or shoulder injury, our team at Island Sports Physical Therapy can help you recover safely and return to daily activities with confidence.

Posture Mistakes That Lead to Neck & Back Pain

Small daily habits can add up to big discomfort. Poor posture places extra stress on your spine and muscles, often leading to neck stiffness, upper back tension, and low back pain.

Common posture mistakes include:
• Slouching while sitting or standing
• Forward head posture from phones or computers
• Rounded shoulders
• Leaning more on one side of the body
• Holding your phone between your shoulder and ear

Why posture matters:
When your body is out of alignment, muscles work harder than they should. Over time, this can lead to pain, fatigue, and limited mobility.

Simple posture tips:
• Keep ears aligned over shoulders
• Sit with feet flat and core engaged
• Adjust screens to eye level
• Take movement breaks throughout the day

If neck or back pain is affecting your daily life, the team at Island Sports Physical Therapy can help correct posture issues and build strength to support your spine.

About Us

Our work is challenging and we prefer it that way. Combining competence… compassion… and good old-fashioned “hard work”, we do our most to help each individual achieve their rehabilitative goals. I truly believe that our facilities and staff are successful due to the consistency in offering quality “hands on” care and personal supervision that is left out in other centers.

At Island Sports Physical Therapy, it is our belief that patients need and deserve education along with their sophisticated sports medicine science and treatment. Equipment alone does not make people better. The intelligent use of education, coupled with exercise and home program development to fit each individual’s need, is the backbone of our success.

Our hope is that our patients don’t just recover… but they prevent future re-injury and obtain the maximum performance possible.

Keith A. May, P.T. Executive Director
