My name is Territa Chambers and I am a doctoral student at National University. I am conducting a research study to contextualize the experiences of Black women who experience disordered eating and tension between mainstream and Black beauty ideals.
I am recruiting individuals who meet all of these criteria:
1. You are 18 years old or older.
2. You identify as Black and female in the United States of America
3. You have never been diagnosis with an eating disorder.
4. You had 1 episode of disordered eating (emotional eating, binge eating, compulsive eating, overeating, stress eating, dieting, food restrictions, safe foods, fear foods, food rituals, obsession with “clean eating” or “healthy eating” or body checking) within the last 28 days.
5. You had 1 episode of double consciousness body image concerns (endorsing White and Black standards of beauty, such as lighter skin tone, certain type of hair curl patterns, “slim thick”, slim waist, big butt etc.) within the last 28 days.
If you decide to participate in this study, you will be asked to do the following activities:
1. Complete the Double Consciousness Body Image Scale ,approximately 20 minutes, via Zoom meeting during interview.
2. Complete the Superwoman Scale, approximately 20 minutes, via Zoom meeting during interview.
3. Engage in two separate 60- minute weekend scheduled, Sista Circles meetings occurring bi-weekly via Zoom.
4. Complete two separate independent written reflections after each Sista Circle meeting and email to the researcher by the day after the meeting.
During these activities, you will be asked questions about:
1. Mainstream (White) and Black beauty ideals relationship to your eating patterns and body image
