Recent research underscores the significant role our gut microbiome—the community of microorganisms in our digestive tract—plays in mental health. A study published in *BMC Psychiatry* (July 2024) reveals a two-way relationship between gut bacteria and major depressive disorder (MDD). Key findings include:

- **Protective Bacteria**: Certain gut bacteria, such as those from the *Actinobacteria* phylum and *Bifidobacteriaceae* family, may reduce the risk of developing MDD.

- **Harmful Bacteria**: Conversely, other bacteria like those from the *Firmicutes* and *Proteobacteria* phyla are associated with an increased risk of MDD.

These insights suggest that maintaining a balanced gut microbiome could be crucial for mental well-being. Incorporating probiotics and a fiber-rich diet might support beneficial bacteria, potentially enhancing mental health.

Did you know that menstrual products are among the most requested yet least donated items at food banks? Throughout the month of March, we are excited to be supporting United Way/Centraide SDG’e fourth annual period poverty campaign, Period Promise. From now until the end of March, we are collecting menstrual products here at the pharmacy in support of the campaign for people experiencing period poverty in our community. No one should have to choose between buying food or buying menstrual products, but that is the case for 1 in 4 Canadians.
