Hey y’all! If you’re new to this space (or new to me), welcome!

I am Devlynn “Dev” Neu (they/he), MS, OTR/L, CSOT, aka The Rainbow OT! Y’all can just can just call me Dev. I am q***r, non-binary, and disabled, you’ll see these identities woven through the work I have done and aspire to do. I am currently situated in Ithaca, NY and am proud to have my origins in Rochester, NY.

I am an occupational therapist with 7 years of clinical experience with practice experience in acute care, in-patient rehab, outpatient rehab, home health, and community settings. My background is in physical medicine, neurorehab, sexuality & intimacy, mental health, trauma informed care, LGBTQIA+ care, and gender affirming care. I am a certified sexuality OT through .

I am an assistant professor, clinician, and doctoral student. My scholarship is currently focused on establishing a clearer pathway for gender affirming care in occupational therapy and identifying occupational therapy’s role in supporting and facilitating experiences of gender euphoria. I also serve on an interdisciplinary team as a co-founder and co-facilitator of an interdisciplinary community-based program for people with Parkinson’s Disease.

Service is an important part of my work. I currently serve as Co-Chair of The Network for LGBTQIA+ Concerns in OT, on the Executive Council for the Multicultural, Diversity, and Inclusion Network, and have previously served on the board of COTAD.

With that, there is more to life than service, work, and occupational therapy. On this page you will find everything from memes, fashionable outfits, and fun life moments to calls to action, community organization, educational posts, advocacy, and activism.

Stick around if you’d like to share joy, take action, learn a little, and make authentic connections.✨

The Rainbow OT is a solo project, it is just me behind this account/platform/website. If you’re here for collaboration, speaking engagements, or requests, please contact: therainbowot@gmail.com. Please do not submit formal requests through DMs or messaging, I will at times miss them and we will both be sad.

With love and solidarity,
Dev

Had the absolute pleasure of joining some magical colleagues at for an interdisciplinary panel on Gender Affirming Care (GAC). The conversation was powerful, transformative, and filled with hope. Thank you for facilitating this event and for inviting and I to crash your Human Conditions course on Thursday. Sarah and I were humbled by the brilliant students who successfully blocked us from reaching the kahoot podium.

Special thanks to for being an amazing travel partner, GAC trailblazer, and all around awesome human.

The final post of Part 1!

There is no excuse for not providing gender affirming occupational therapy care to all clients, p*ers, and students that we work with in all settings and spaces.

But what if you don’t know where to start?

Stay tuned for the next parts of this series as we dive into how to get started, general considerations, and practice considerations. I will host an IG live interview with an OT practitioner with expertise in GAC.

Dates and times of the live chats TBD.

Leave any questions and/or guesses for who will join me in the comments!

Reminder: The AOTA Code of Ethics is an enforceable document that applies to AOTA members.

Occupational therapy practitioners are bound by the AOTA Code of Ethics to support gender affirming care. Period.

This is not limited to clinical practice, this also applies to academic programs. The AOTA Policy E.15 highlights that OT curricula should include education of gender affirming care as it aligns with current practice standards. The policy also highlights that education environments should be inclusive and equitable for gender diverse students, faculty, and staff.

Does your program provide safe spaces and inclusive curriculum?

What could they do better to support gender diverse students, faculty, and staff?

What can YOU do better to support your gender diverse p*ers?

Leave some ideas in the comments below! ⬇️

Dropping the mic 🎤 after the first sentence

The Tea is, all OT practitioners have an obligation to provide gender affirming care.

Be involved.

What in your states current legislation on and/or protections for gender affirming care?

What programs or services are there locally in your county or state that support access to gender affirming care?

What national resources could your client access for gender affirming services and support?

Take 10 minutes to search and answer these questions. This is only part of your responsibility. Feel free to share what you find in the comments!

To me, Occupational Therapy directly aligns with gender affirming care. We empower and support the clients engagement in occupations that are necessary and/or meaningful for them. This includes the perosnalized occupations of dressing, grooming, toileting, and more that we ALL use daily to affirm who we are and how we want to present ourselves to the world.

According to AOTA, gender affirming care is defined and informed first and foremost by the needs of each individual client (AOTA, 2021)

It really is that simple, gender affirming care is meeting the needs of each individual client. You may have read that and thought, “Well yeah Dev, I do that all the time.💅🏼” The problem is this is not happening equitably in OT practice for all clients, in all settings, and in all states. OT practitioners don’t flinch to talk about increasing access to toileting after someone fractures a hip, yet quickly turn away when that involves navigating stand to p*e device options for a client with a v***a.

So what is YOUR responsibility? Check out the next posts to learn more!

Gender affirming care is defined as, “Medically necessary, evidence-based care that improves the physical and mental health of transgender and gender diverse people” by the American Medical Association.

For occupational therapy practitioners, gender affirming care (GAC) is health care that respectfully affirmative gender expansive individuals’ gender identity while holistically meeting their physical, mental, and social health needs and well-being. AOTA’s Policy E.15 provides clarity, structure, and rationale regarding the professions commitment to affirming the care, safety, and inclusions of gender diverse clients and colleagues across all OT spaces.

Check out the next posts to learn more about OT’s role in GAC, and more specifically, what your role is as an OTP!
