The Valley ECD Umbrella Group

A community of practice for Early Childhood Development (ECD) practitioners.

We welcome colleagues from ECD centres, daycares, playgroups and related initiatives to join the group as we deepen support for children and families across our community. We currently comprise colleagues from 10 early learning programmes in centres across our valley. The Valley ECD Umbrella Group welcomes practitioners from ECD centres, daycares, informal playgroups, and related initiatives to join the group as we grow and deepen our support for the youngest children and their families. Collaborating, communicating, sharing, learning together, focusing on personal and professional development, and supporting fundraising to showcase our centres and raise awareness about the importance of early childhood development. Our goal is to work together to develop consistently high standards of quality early learning and care for every child, in stimulating and safe environments. This will, in turn, ensure better outcomes for young children, families, and the greater community across our valley. Berea Educare, Genadendal Educare, Greyton House Village School, Greyton Speelsentrum, Little Steps Educare, Silverwood Playgroup, The Way Prechool, Voorstekraal Educare, Voorstekraal Learning Centre, Vrolike Vinkies Day Care.

**Introducing Thabo to our Valley!**

The ECD Umbrella Group was fortunate to be invited to an excellent training session in Caledon recently - a first for the ECD programmes in our Valley! Organised by Valenzia Mackenzie of the Western Cape Education Department, we were introduced to the wonderful Finding Thabo toolkit, developed by the Reach Trust.

Finding Thabo is a fabulous South African exercise with colour, noise, bicycles, taxis, Pick n Pay - you name it! - designed to inspire young children’s learning in a playful and compelling way. So exciting for our Group, who rarely have the opportunity to be involved in something so stimulating.

Thanks to Andrew Rudge, CEO of the Reach Trust and fondly known as Thabo’s Dad, we all played the game. We ‘found’ Thabo, and each person came away with unsuppressed bubbles of delight and a full kit activity posters, teacher guides and big picture books. We can’t wait to introduce this wonderful concept to the children in our care!
