People have debated the concept of "life balance" for decades, and it means something different to everyone.

One person might think he's achieved balance when he can leave work early enough to eat dinner with his family. Someone else might view it as having a flexible schedule, so that she can study for a part-time graduate degree. Yet another person might feel fulfilled by spending her "free" time advancing her career.

In short, you achieve life balance when you have enough time to pursue both work and personal interests that you love. However, when you feel as if one side of your life is using up too much of your energy, you can become stressed, your productivity can fall, and your personal relationships can become strained.

I found the article very informative and decided to summarise the content for all of us to benefit from.

Cytokines got their name from the Greek words cyto (cell) and kinos (movement).
They are small proteins that your body’s cells may release in response to an infection.
For example, the cells of your immune system may release them as a response to an infection which triggers an inflammatory response for your protection.

The problem occurs when your body’s reaction to an infection goes into overdrive.

For example, when a virus enters the lungs, it triggers an immune response that causes immune cells to fight the virus and to create localized inflammation.

In a some of us however, the body releases excessive or uncontrolled levels of cytokines, which causes hyperinflammation( too much inflammation) and may lead to serious complications or even death.
This hyperinflammation and consequent damage is what we call the cytokine storm.

Who is at a higher risk of developing a cyctokine storm.?

1. Obese people.
2. People with chronic health conditions like Diabetes, Heart Disease, Asthma.

Are there ways to optimize your immune health and reduce your risk of a cytokine storm?

Metformin is one of the most common diabetic medication prescribed in Malaysia.

Glucophage, Glucophage XR, Glumet DC, Diabetmin,etc are all different brands of Metformin found in Malaysia.

It is a drug that tries to address the root cause of Diabetes which is Insulin Resistance.
This is wonderful because it helps to improve sensitivity of insulin receptors in our body...

When insulin receptors are less sensitive, the body is able to use sugar or glucose more effectively.

Unfortunately, one common side effect of Metformin is that it depletes Vitamin B12.

Vit B12 is really critical for the health of nerves and many diabetic patients develope numbness in the feet and hands due to this vitamin deficiency.
This is called Diabetic Neuropathy.

Clinical Tip:
Ask your doctor for a good B12 vitamin to take if you have been started on Metformin.

How to take precaution againts Covid 19.

Our immunity plays a big role in the fight againts covid 19 infection.
Why some people worsen and some don't has got to do with the immunity of our body.

We also know people with covid have high inflammation and poor gut health issues to start off with.

Those who are already having inflammation are at a higher risk of getting severe covid. Diabetes, pre - diabetes, heart disease, asthma, copd, obesity are all diseases that causes inflammation making people with these conditions high risk individuals.

The health system of Malaysia is already over stretched and collapsed...
Doctors and nurses are overworked and can't cope with the number of infected people.

People are told to go home and wait and only to come to the hospital if breathless...

Many are left to go through covid by themselves...scared and alone...the fear of death is real.... Bodies are brought in to the hospital....
Families are affected and situation is not going to get any better soon.

What can we do..?

Prevention helps a lot...
What action and changes can we adopt to help ourselves and loved ones.

Malaysians need to wake up and take action.
Keeping ones self healthy should be priority.

We are fighting a silent enemy we cant see...

Our defenses have to be strong at all times....

We cant let our guard down at any time..

What can be done?

1.
Please follow SOPs. Social distancing, hand washing, double masking.
Dont go out if you do not need to. Pls dont think that your best friend or neighbour is covid free...trust no one now...
Protect the elderly and vulnerable.
If you need to go visit your parents , wear a mask.
Your action will save them.
Dont be selfish.

2.
Walk and start some form of physical exercise...obesity carries the highest risk...
Just start....even if it for 15 mins....start.

3.
Stop all junk food, processed food, sugar laden foods and drinks....all these contribute to inflammation.
The worst thing I see happening is long ques at McDonald's and other fast food restaurants....stop feeding our bodies non-real food that can worsen covid if we get it.

4.
Boost your immunity.
Sunlight is your best friend for Vit D....get adequate exposure.

Supplement with Vit D if you can get sun exposure. Speak to your doctor about it.
Vit D helps boost the immune system.

Vit C is a great immune booster as well. Natural vit c like Amla has properties to help boost the immune system...it also contains minerals like zinc which the body requires to fight off infections.
If you cant get Amla, any vit c will do.

Keep your gut strong. Your gut is your gateway to health.
Eat real foods and take a pre and probiotic supplement if required.

Sleep at the right time.

Manage stress in any way we can....talk to a loved one, breathing exercises, meditation, yoga....what works for you...do it.

We pray and hope this invisible enemy goes away the way it came but for now we need to fight...fight and survive...

Help the doctors by helping yourselves and family first.
