People often asked me why I moved to Costa Rica, what took me there… I always say Volcanoes and cheap airfare and I needed to get far from the life I was living…

I left for college at 17, emotionally immature and unprepared for the life I was stepping into. I moved into an apartment with two boys from San Diego and a friend from my hometown. My emotional immaturity, paired with bulimia, made navigating new relationships and independence especially difficult.

By my third year of college, I was deep in alcoholism and had begun to understand the cycle of addiction from the inside out. My mental health was unraveling, and I was living in ways that now feel hard to believe I survived.

One unexpected lifeline during that time was my exposure to Eastern studies and world religions—ironically, the only classes I truly excelled in. I was profoundly drawn to the emphasis on the relationship between body and mind, even as I struggled to inhabit either one safely. Something in me recognized truth there before I had the capacity to live it.

The road out was not gentle. There were hard falls, painful reckonings, and moments where survival itself feels miraculous in hindsight.

At 25, I began again. I moved back in with my parents and slowly started reseeding my life—massage school first, then yoga teacher trainings. With each step, the path shifted. Eventually, it carried me to Costa Rica, where my life took on an entirely new shape.

I have lived far from myself and found my way back through the body.
Because of that, I recognize pain without needing it to explain itself.
My compassion comes from having survived my own unraveling, and now almost 20 years later I find myself grateful being of service rooted in helping others feel safe enough to remember who they are.
