Sept. 28, Satsang roundup: Dead AND Alive
The free class has been posted on Youtube and will remain for a few days only: https://youtu.be/JSwApyKPYBU
Here is a recap of some of the topics and a link to the recorded class to view at your leisure:
On Saturday morning we discussed the in-between state of life and death. We did NOT discuss the afterlife or pre-death phenomena! I tried my best to stay on the topic of the actual death-experience itself. The in-between state is something of a neutral zone where our Soul and consciousness reside before moving on to our next stage. It is called many things:
• Purgatory in Western religions
• The Bardo in Buddhist traditions (bardo means “between the two” in Tibetan)
• Antarābhav in Sanatan Dharm (Hinduism. Antara means in between, bhav means existence in Sanskrit)
• Duat in ancient Egyptian
• The Portal (my own label during and after my near-death experience)
Satsang continued with a 5 minute reading from the Dead AND Alive chapter from Within the Portal.
It is important to recognize this dimension as a temporary, in-between, sort of gateway, one travels through along the way in the Soul’s journey. It is a transitional phase between afterlife destinations. To use the common medical disclaimers we hear, “results may vary." Haha, destinations may vary based upon the individual!
• Celestial (heavenly)
• Hellish
• Reincarnation (plant, insect, animal or human)
• Liberation—Soul or Self-Realization
o Union of the Soul with Everythingness (Oneness-samadhi-nirvana)
o Liberation includes dissolution of consciousness
• Divine-Realization—God-Realization
o Union of the Soul with the Divine
o Divine Realization includes divination of consciousness
The first ones are temporary: celestial abodes, hellish ones and reincarnations are all temporary. These are not eternal destinations, but are attained by how we lived our lives and interacted with the In-Between phase. We’ve all been back and forth between the countless times, like spiritual ping-pong balls!
The last two are permanent and eternal: Liberation and Divine Realization. In the Liberation categories, our consciousness is dissolved, hence no more suffering as the Buddha taught—we have no ‘mind’ to perceive with so we exist without subjective perception: we are ONE with existence but do not perceive any longer. In Divine Realization, our consciousness is divinized—all of its material properties (ego-self-subjectivity…) are removed so all that remains of mind is the Divine elements which is pure: we are ONE with divinity and continue to perceive this for eternity.
The Portal is a sublime realm: it is egoless and desireless—almost. Your self still exists but is in a purer state of clarity, temporarily unbound from ego, karmas and desires. Your ‘self’ becomes mostly dormant while Within the Portal and it is reactivated when you leave to re-exist in another realm.
We had a fun and challenging time explaining the inexplainable! It was quite Zen to explore and try to define that which is ineffable to material consciousness! We agreed that being unable to understand it, meant we were understanding it.
Next Satsang topic: Resurrection: The Soul’s transition from the in-between state, Within the Portal, to a physical body. Should be fun!
