Are you doing “all the things” yet your HRV still won’t improve? Here are three things you’re missing:

1. Lymphatic health. Your lymphatic system drains lymph into the blood via the thoracic duct into the subclavian veins. If your lymph is filled with toxins, emotions, or pathogens, your heart has to work harder. The harder your heart works, the lower your HRV.

2. Toxins. Heavy metals, chemicals, alcohol, ni****ne, air pollutants, pesticides and even endotoxins increase stress and inflammation. Higher stress & inflammation = lower HRV.

3. Emotional health. Your subconscious beliefs and emotional traumas can create a low level stress all day long, keeping your HRV low. A great place to start is to ask yourself, “what beliefs are preventing me from having a higher HRV?” For me, I had a thought pattern loop that I never was able to rest or recover. I was playing victim mode of never having enough “me” time. When I realized I was choosing to prioritize other things over myself, I reframed those limiting beliefs and thought patterns and “released” the emotions associated with that belief - this brought my HRV up instantly. Maybe you have a subconscious belief that you’ll never be healthy or you can’t achieve a high HRV because being healthy is hard for you. Or you’re doomed because of your genetics. Whatever it might be, if you can’t get your HRV up, there’s likely a thought pattern that’s holding you back.

After avoiding gluten for nearly a decade I started eating bread again. 😮

And here’s why:👇🏼

1. Fermented sourdough contains lactic acid bacteria and lactobacillus reuteri, which gets transferred from a mother’s colon to her infant via breast milk. These strains are very important for building the baby’s immunity.

2. My gut and blood sugars love it! Fermented sourdough doesn’t cause digestive issues for me or spike my blood sugar too high. I also have tested my blood sugar before and after eating, and have found it comes back to baseline level within two hours of consuming. 🙌🏼

3. I stopped fearing carbs. Learning how to eat them and when to eat them made a big difference in how they affected my energy, mood, blood sugars, and sleep. 👏🏼

4. Beta-glucan, a type of fiber in sourdough, has been researched to remove forever chemicals. Forever chemicals are a class of chemicals that take a very long time to get out your body, and have been linked to cancer, liver damage and poor immunity.

Here’s the catch. It’s not just any bread that will do this. Bread should be fermented and ideally organic, as seen with fermented sourdough. We use flour, which is an organic, chemical free, heritage wheat variety. The reason you are seeing a rise in people not being able to consume gluten is because we are no longer using heritage varieties or fermenting gluten like we used to.

There’s no “one size fits all” when it comes to nutrition, but after working with clients for over a decade on nutrition, there are common themes that work:

1. Focus more on the quality of food. Ask yourself, “does my meal have protein, healthy fat and fiber?” Focus on these three groups first. Then ask yourself, “where are these foods coming from?” The shorter the ingredient list, the better. No ingredient lists are best. If your meal isn’t keeping you full for at least 4 hours then you may need to work with a nutritionist on proper meal balancing, but first, start with protein, fat and fiber first.

2. You’re not what you eat - you’re what you digest. We spend so much time thinking about what we’re eating, but we fail to think about the “how.” Are you eating on the go? Are you eating while working? Are you feeling rushed, stressed, overwhelmed or emotional while eating? All of these impair or slow down digestion. If you’re spending money on high quality food and spending time thinking about how to properly eat, but not assessing your eating environment, slow down and enjoy that food.

3. Eating the same foods over and over again is a major cause for food sensitivities and gut issues. Rotate your foods, eat locally and seasonally, buy different brands, get variety. Many of us eat the same 5-6 fruits and veggies over and over again.

Step 1: soak your mushrooms and then put them in the sun (for extra vitamin D!).
Step 2: roast your veggies (including the broccoli leaves and stems!).
Step 3: throw them in a container to add as a side to a dish or on top of a salad (this is great if your gut health isn’t ideal - less raw, more cooked!).
Step 4: voíla, your prepped, tasty veggies are ready to go without second thought. 🙃

Gosh, veggies are so much brighter and yummier in summer. ☀️

We purchase high quality food, high quality material items, high quality supplements - why not “purchase” high quality thoughts?

The more you think negative thoughts, the more you will see a negative life. Negative thoughts look for problems - positive thoughts look for solutions.

It wasn’t until I’ve learned about the power of thoughts affecting our biology that I’ve felt confident and in control of my health (physical, mental and emotional). When I learned to change the thoughts about my body failing me, I found solutions to getting my body back in balance so much quicker and easier.

The most important thing that comes to your health is paying attention to what is going on in that mind of yours. If you are not mindful of that voice in your head, negative thought will dominate. I’m hungry. I’m bored. I’m stressed. I’m tired. This is part of our survival.

But you can change those thoughts. You can change your brain cells. You can heal your brain. You have the power and choice to do this. This is called neuroplasticity.

Neuroplasticity, the ability to change your brain, reflects your current environment.

If your environment is filled with busyness or stress, your brain will continue to rewire with busyness and stress.

If your environment is filled with calmness, peace, happiness, your brain will continue to rewire with calmness, peace, and happiness.

You get to choose.
You get to choose how you start your day.
You get to choose how intentional you want to be with your health.
You get to choose the words you speak and the thoughts you think.

You may not get to control everything or everyone around you, but you can choose how you show up in this world. ♥️

Have you ever considered having a “food value system?” A certain food that you know you want to avoid because you prioritize your health. A food that’s easy to avoid because you’ve made up your mind you’re just not going to eat it? If you have one, comment below. 👇🏼

For me, it’s artificial dyes and colors. 🙅🏽‍♀️

It’s just not worth it to me. And once I made up my mind to avoid foods with these ingredients, I’m not tempted to consume them. I treat it like I have an allergy to it. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Hopefully the FDA will continue to ban these carcinogenic, neurotoxic, obesogen ingredients, but until then, I will do my best to avoid them at all costs. Which means that Isla has to avoid them too. Which means her birthday cake had zero artificial colors. 🙃

Is it the prettiest cake? No, but it was made with lots of love and that’s what matters most. 😜

The pumpkin soup from Eat Like a Girl was a big hit yesterday! My family didn’t even know that I used bone broth instead of vegetable broth (until now). 😜

I can’t wait to keep diving into these delicious recipes. Up next are the chia protein bars…🤤

Sold my mom and sister on matcha today with this little flight. 👏🏼

I just love how it makes my brain feel. It’s a nice little brain booster without the jitters or crash. I can drink it in the afternoon and not have it affect my sleep. And if you watched my earlier matcha reels, it stops blood flow to cancer cells. 🤯

Matcha is also great to swap out for coffee the week before your period since you’re extra sensitive to cortisol that time of the month. Coffee = cortisol. Not saying coffee is bad (I love it and drink 1-2 cups of half caff most days), but it does raise cortisol levels in most people.

This matcha flight was:
-French vanilla iced matcha
-pumpkin spice iced matcha
-cacao mint matcha

No sunday scaries over here. 🍵🙃

Learning about the power of nutrition is what led me down the wellness path almost 15 years ago. I was obsessed with understanding how food affected the human body, and after seeing how much my health changed after eating better, I just couldn’t get enough.

Throughout the years I’ve ventured into learning about other healing modalities and have found it so easy to get caught up in shiny object syndrome or the latest fad. What I love and appreciate most about Eat Like a Girl is that it helped respark my original love of nutrition and nourishing the body with what we eat.

If you want to learn how to eat for your hormones, eat to feel better, eat to lose weight, and/or eat to nourish and love the body you’re living in, this book is for you. The challenge is not to be perfect. The challenge is to be whole. To be present. ♥️

This little girl is changing so fast before my eyes. She helps me remember to be present and to stay in a place of joy. She’s helped me heal from perfectionism, and has reminded me of how precious the little day to day moments are. Our kids truly are our best teachers, aren’t they? 🥺
