I know it is very easy to have negative thoughts about this process however it is best to stay calm and identify an advocate to accompany you on this journey.

You are the main player on this team. Don't let any IEP team make you feel like they make the decisions. If you don't want something (a service, a goal, any specific) you ask for it to be changed or removed. Speak up! Advocate for your child.

Don't wait to contact the school to request for a meeting.
Don't wait to get your child tested.
Don't wait until the meeting to ask questions.
Just don't wait.....

It is so easy to get caught up in your child's current strengths and weaknesses. I always like to visualize how I want my client to function independently as a young adult and then work backwards.

Please look at your child's goals annually to ensure the school is challenging your child. I have seen an IEP where the same goal was on there for 3 straight years. Please review your IEP.

If your schedule allows, get outside of school help via tutoring, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. I always tell parents to double up services if they can because you will definitely see a difference and growth in your child.

The one page in the IEP that you should definitely pay attention to is the service page. Make sure the services are listed correctly and your child's accommodations are appropriate. If your child is middle school age or higher, consult them about the accommodations. When a child has multiple teachers, you can build their advocacy muscle to communicate to the teacher about their accommodations.

In order to bet the system, you have to know the system. Learn the terminology that special education staff uses in order to get what you want from them. Most of the time, school personnel will use professional jargon to confuse you and intimidate you into not asking questions or clarity. Learn the lingo and then use it.

The parental rights booklet is long and full of complex terms. I would suggest for you to request for the case manager or someone on the team to highlight the key points that you should know. If that don't, find resources online that will help you learn about your parent rights.

This is a great tip to remember. I would also add when you are communicating with your child's school never email just one person. Email the entire team. If it a serious matter, I would involve the administration as well.

As a previous middle school SLP, I would always bribe, I mean invite :) my students to their meeting. I would convey to them that their parents aren't in the classroom therefore they (the student) needs to be present to discuss what is working for them and what is not working. They are part of the team too.
