Each year, over 350,000 women lose their lives to cervical cancer, 90% of them in low- and middle-income countries. The is the most effective way to protect girls and adolescents, and at JSI, we’re partnering with countries to expand vaccine access and strengthen immunization systems.

HPV is a very common STI in the U.S. and can cause cervical and other cancers. The HPV vaccine is safe, effective, and can prevent up to 90% of HPV-related cancers, yet only 59% of adolescents are vaccinated. Increasing uptake of the HPV vaccine among adolescents is a top priority in Healthy People 2030.

Sexual and reproductive health care providers can play a key role in the prevention of cervical cancers by increasing the uptake of the HPV vaccine. The JSI-led Reproductive Health National Training Center developed the HPV Vaccine Toolkit to help providers implement key strategies to increase HPV vaccination among adolescent clients in family planning settings: https://rhntc.org/resources/hpv-vaccine-toolkit-increasing-hpv-vaccine-uptake-among-adolescent-clients-family

With persistent gaps in ending and as a public health threat, integrating the HIV response into broader health systems can result in care that is convenient, efficient, sustainable, accessible, addresses a wide range of health needs and diverse life experiences, and offers the information and choice necessary for clients to make decisions about their health. This kind of thoughtful integration will require strengthening core health systems to drive better health outcomes across the board.

In November 2024, JSI convened leaders in the HIV response to discuss this topic and help identify what is needed to advance an integrated, person-centered response to HIV.
