Move into Freedom Welcome to 'Move into Freedom', thank you so much for taking the time to visit my page.

I will be sharing my work as a Dance Movement Psychotherapist, Perinatal Mental Wellbeing Practitioner, Somatic Body Map Practitioner and wellbeing Dance Practitioner Hello my name is Emma Dickson and I am a Registered Dance Movement Psychotherapist. Dance Movement Psychotherapy recognises the connection between body and mind. By moving the body through dance, play and movement one is able to being to reconnect with their own body, emotions and can begin to process and make sense of their embodied, lived experiences.

'Dance Movement Therapy.....is a form of therapy which has the body-mind relationship at its core. Movement , with both its physical and metaphorical potential, provides a unique medium through which clients can find expression, reach new interpretations and ultimately achieve greater integration of their emotions, cognitive and physical experience.' (Meekums, 2005)

Currently I am working with Children as part of a growing Play Therapy Centre. My work is exploring and understanding the importance and benefits that the creative arts have for children and teenagers, and how these outlets can support children and teenagers to make sense of the the world around them and their own lived experiences. I have recently undertaken a mentorship in Body Mapping, this is following my own experiences of this very personal process, as well as implementing elements of Body Mapping in to my past work. Body Mapping supports individuals to take some time to slow down from their busy lives, to focus on being in the present and to find ways of reconnecting with themselves. The Body Mapping process sees you creating a life-size outline of your body on to canvas or paper. By working creatively with art materials, images, words and symbols you are given space to unpack and communicate your own unique lived experiences that are held in the body. Individuals can begin to find ways of reconnect with their body and mind, whilst noticing how one sees and experiences the world around them is influenced by past and present experience, and how with a new awareness of self the way in which we are in and see the world might change. I have recently started therapeutic dance sessions in the community for adults who are at varying stages of Dementia. For these music and movement sessions I am looking to use music and activities that link with yearly events such as Easter and summer. The sessions aim to be fun, friendly and accessible, whilst supporting individuals and a group as a whole with mobility, co-ordination, communication, and connecting with those around them. If you have any questions or are interested in attending a workshop or community dance session then please private message or email me.
