Hey, Have You Eaten? Food from a critical lens by Sarah K and Kerri P. We bring you cheap, diverse recipes from different cultures and break down truths about nutrition!

In many Asian cultures, one of the first ways of greeting someone is asking if they’ve eaten yet. Why, you might ask? We don’t eat to survive. Food is a love language, the centerpiece of many families and friendships. It’s not just a way to show hospitality, it’s also a way to communicate care. Sharing a meal is what forms a kinship with people around us. We grew up with an understanding that food is a symbol for love, community, and relationships. A great meal brings people together and creates spaces to learn and share stories. With our unique cultures and passions, we wanted to create a resource that serves to inspire community engagement and relationship building amongst our readers. Here’s what we’re bringing to the table:

RECIPES: Delicious, affordable, and healthy meals
NUTRITION: The science behind what you eat
CULTURE: Diverse people and the food they grew up with

With this blog, hopefully when someone ever asks: “Hey, Have you eaten?” You’d be able to answer, “No, but let’s eat together!

Our very first post for the series, "In Your Kitchen." A Trinidadian rice dish by Ana! It’s parboiled rice simmered in coconut milk, caramelized chicken, fresh spicy peppers, pigeon peas — the meal marries together as a sweet, savory, creamy, and light concoction.

Read more to learn about Trinidadian culture, Ana's experience growing up there, and how food plays into the local culture.
