2024 will forever hold a special place in my heart as it was my first full year with Yonder Midwifery! As I look back, I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude.

✨ I attended 46 births as well as countless prenatal, postpartum, and well baby visits! Thank you to all of the families who allowed me to care for you! You all are so dear to me.

✨ Served as primary midwife for 28 of those and co-primary/assist for the others. Thank you to the other midwives who have trusted me to support them and their clients!

✨ Was on call 24/7 for 51 out of 52 weeks. Thank you to my kids, partner, family, and friends who are the most understanding people in the world! And to the ones who make sure my girls don’t miss a thing while I’m gone, thank you for being willing to come running at the drop of a hat. I couldn’t do this without you! (, , .g, ._.chrys, .13, , 🤍)

✨ I can’t wait to see what 2025 holds! Cheers to more autonomy in birth, inclusive care, sweet squishy babes, and being the happiest midwife in all the land!

I just locked up after a full clinic day and feel heavy.

When I’m asked what I do for work and say “I’m a midwife,” 9/10 the response is “wow, I bet that is so fun!!” And it IS. I’ve never been so sure that I was doing what I’m meant to do. I love this work. And a lot of the time it is fun. I mean, what is more fun than witnessing new life and people do things they weren’t sure they could do on a regular basis?

But sometimes it means sending a mom that has spent the last 35 weeks praying, and prepping, and doing everything “right” to the hospital because baby is coming now, having to be the voice to say “we can’t do this at home.” Sometimes it’s exploding with joy because a repeat client just called to say she had a positive pregnancy test, but then your phone rings again to another whispering through tears “I’m bleeding. Am I losing this one too?” It’s making sure my own child’s fever is coming down before closing the office door to care for another family. It’s missing birthdays, holidays, performances, and date nights because a baby is on the way. It’s wiping tears, holding hands, talking through the what-ifs, and processing the births that go far from planned. It’s holding the single mom that doesn’t know if she can do this on her own and is navigating a system that refuses to make it any easier on her.

Being a midwife means many things, but today I’m feeling how much we are called to stand in the in-between. The thin place. To touch the very veil between darkness:light, life:death, hope:despair. I’m so thankful to be the hands trusted to hold it all.

It’s been a busy month over here and we aren’t done yet! My heart is full to the brim after helping welcome these new little lives and supporting their parents through all of the ups and downs of the postpartum.

Did you know that most new parents get ONE check up after giving birth? It blows my mind that it is accepted as the norm in the US. It’s no wonder our maternal morbidity and mortality rates are abysmal. With Yonder Midwifery, both you and your baby will have a minimum of 5 check ups after birth. That doesn’t even include all of the texting you are able to do when the inevitable “is this normal?” question pops up. I want you to feel held, safe, and supported through every phase!

Today is Yonder Midwifery’s 1st birthday!

While I could fill this page with thoughts on the journey here and all that it held, what I really want to express is gratitude.

Thank you to the midwives who taught me how to be a midwife of excellence. , , and as my incredible preceptors and so many others who took the time to teach, and talk, and guide me even now (, , , to name a few).

Thank you to all of the families who trusted me to care for them. It is truly an honor, and I love every single one of you!

To my friends and family who have supported my every step and cheered me on when I doubted myself, thank you thank you.

To every person who has spoken well of me and Yonder Midwifery even when I’m not in the room, recommended me to pregnant friends, or even liked a post here on Instagram/facebook….thank you. Your support means the world!

She called me and said, “These feel different, but I think we should wait a little longer.” Even still, I got in the shower and thought, “I’m just going to head that way and stay close by just in case.” Call it midwife spidey senses, I guess. I knew I wasn’t going to make it when I was still on the highway when she called to tell me this baby was coming. I put her on speaker phone, turned on the emergency flashers, and noted times as I talked her through catching her own baby. I came in to find her grinning ear to ear in the bathtub with him wrapped in a warm towel, skin to skin for the first time with his mama. “I can’t believe I just did that!” she whispered.

But I could. I watched her choose parenthood even when it felt scary to do alone. I watched her transfer to me late in care because she knew a home birth was right for her. I watched her do her research and make her own decisions through every choice regarding her care. I saw her strength every step of the way. So yeah, this part didn’t surprise me one bit ✨

Birth is nothing if not a mystery. I’ve never seen two look the same. So we learn to bend. Each breath, each contraction, each moment of rest, wondering if you can do it, and then doing it anyway, it’s all part of the story. Birth is so much more than what it takes to meet your baby. It’s a road to meeting yourself too.

Look at this big brother and sister helping me listen to fetal heart tones today! “That’s my brother in there!” just about melted my heart!

You can bring anyone you want, or no one at all, to your appointments! We’ve had grandparents-to-be, great grand parents, best friends, siblings, doulas, and all kinds of big and little kiddos join us. It is so fun to welcome them into the process, answer their questions, and show them what makes the midwifery model of care so special.
