Paige was diagnosed with leukemia and bravely underwent multiple surgeries. This week she got to ring the bell to mark the end of her chemo journey! She adores her care team and they were there to cheer her on.

Shout out to the nurses in the NICU who are doing their best to care for our babies! Kash would not be where he is today if it wasn’t for “Mama Shay” and Hannah aka Cali at Children’s National! Their love and care helps me feel comfortable with doing simple things like going back to work until he comes home, and spending time with family and friends which sounds nearly impossible when you have a baby in the NICU. Any guilt that I have from being away from him has been slowly absolved knowing Kash is in good hands and has a special team on his side that has been there for him these past 4 months.”

Alicia felt intense pain up her right leg during a soccer game. After trying physical therapy with no success, an MRI revealed a stress fracture in her hip. Justice was born with a hole in her heart and multiple body fractures due to her brittle bone condition, Osteogenesis Imperfecta. She's now a thriving toddler! Here's what her mom had to say:

A Virginia family broke out the holiday PJs for the VIPs ❤️ President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden visited with the Casbon family in our Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. 10-month-old Bella has been here her entire life but her care team is working hard to get her back home soon.

We are so grateful that the President and First Lady also spent time with some of our hardworking healthcare workers and read a story to families in our atrium.

Sports Medicine was the theme of the day yesterday at Children's National with a new team in town! We got to meet the D.C. Defenders, one of eight XFL teams scheduled to play in 2023. A few players and the coach visited with patients in the Seacrest Studios where they talked sports and health with leaders from the Fight for Children Sports Medicine Center and chatted with our President & CEO.

A reminder from the NICU: Our precious babies are on continuous cardio-respiratory monitoring. Parents and caregivers should always follow the AAP safe sleep guidelines: Babies should be on their own sleep surface and under no circumstances should babies at home be placed prone to sleep, or have items such as toys, loose bedding, or blanket rolls in their cribs.

What a difference a year makes! Last year Paige was fully immersed in chemotherapy. Now she’s counting down the days until she rings the bell and celebrates her final cancer treatment.

“Thanks to the wonderful care of the doctors, nurses and staff, Paige is almost done fighting cancer,” says mom Kristen. “Children's National saved my baby's life. For that our family is forever grateful.”

Paige can’t wait to spend time with her family and bake desserts for Christmas dinner.

Maddie is a creative extrovert who loves taking center stage in theater productions. At 17, she can pursue her dreams, thanks to her care team at the Rare Disease Institute.

“Going to the hospital used to scare me, but not after starting at Children’s National,” Maddie says. “The doctors talked directly to me. They wanted to know about me and what I wanted to do in life, not just about what was wrong with me.”

With customized treatment, Maddie no longer needs her wheelchair and has more energy to commit to major roles in her high school theater.

“I hope I have a long life,” she says. “Children’s National gives me hope that I might.”
