Hantavirus

While there is no specific treatment that cures hantavirus diseases, early supportive medical care is key to improve survival and focuses on close clinical monitoring and management of respiratory, cardiac and kidney complications. Prevention depends largely on reducing contacts between people and infected rodents.

Hantaviruses are a group of zoonotic viruses that are transmitted primarily by rodents. These viruses are not endemic to South Africa, but global travel can import infected patients from endemic countries.
Transmission

Andes virus transmit to humans primarily through contact with rodents:

Inhalation of aerosolised rodent secretions or excreta (urine, droppings, saliva)
Exposure to environments contaminated with rodent secretions or excreta Direct handling of infected rodents
Rodent bites (rare)
