51.1% (30.5 million) of the SA population is female
Black African women are the most vulnerable, with an unemployment rate of over 30%
Females remain more disadvantaged than males in all categories, BUT the difference between the sexes is narrowing
1 in 4 women has experienced physical or sexual violence
50% of assaults are committed by someone close to the woman
The prevalence of violence is greater among less educated and financially dependent women
Gallstones are very common, they occur more in women than men.
Most people with gallstones have no symptoms, but some may experience-
1. Biliary colic (an intense, dull discomfort or pain in the upper right abdomen area, associated with nausea and vomiting)
2. Atypical symptoms such as belching, early fullness after meals, bloating, heartburn and regurgitation.
Some people with gallstones develop complications-
1. cholecystitis- inflammation and infection of the gallbladder
2. Choledocholithiasis- obstruction of your liver ducts by your gallstones
3. Gallstone pancreatitis- inflammation of your pancreas due to your gallstones
These are serious surgical emergencies.
We recommend that your gallstones and gallbladder be surgically removed if you have experienced any of the above symptoms or complications.
Removal of the gallbladder is mostly performed laparoscopically (key-hole surgery) with minimal scarring and less post-op pain.
