Stage 2 – Experimentation

Addiction begins with experimentation with drugs. Situations that influence teens to experiment include social events and challenging daily tasks. Drug experimentation in teens can be dangerous because of the impact it has, it causes interference with their development of their brain, Teens who experiment with drugs are likely to engage in risky behaviour when under the influence of drugs and more susceptible to developing an addiction if they start using drugs at a young age.
At this level, the user is testing the drug in various situations to see how it affects their life rather than just trying it on its own. Typically, during this stage, the drug is associated with social activities like having fun or unwinding after a long day. It is used to improve party atmospheres or relieve tension related to homework in teenagers.

In Stage 2, cravings for the substance are minimal to non-existent, and the user is still consciously deciding whether to use. The frequency of both alternatives mostly depends on a person’s temperament and motivation for using the substance. They may use it impulsively or under control. There is now no dependence, and if desired, the person can still easily stop using the medicine.
Some of these causes that can lead to drug addiction
• Wanting to be a part of a group or fit in
• Mental health problems in teens such as anxiety, depression, and trauma
• Stressful and traumatic experiences
• Family problems
If you are experimenting with any drug, whether it's alcohol, ma*****na, or prescription medication, you are at risk of developing an addiction. It does not matter how well you think you can handle the drug. The dangers of drug experimentation can quickly catch up to you.
It is important for Teenagers to be educate on the dangerous on Early Substance abuse.
If you see your child is struggling with drug use, or addiction, seek help for them early.
Having the right people to help is important! Here at Care we will help your child beat addiction with proper education and treatment.

Addiction has a Process and the process of addiction has a pattern, thus it may be divided into the phases.

Today we will be looking at the first stage of Addiction – Initiation.

Initiation refers to the first phase of addiction, when a person experiments with a substance for the first time. This can occur at practically any point in a person’s life.

Teenagers experiment with drugs for a variety of reasons, but two prevalent ones are either curiosity or peer pressure. The latter decision is taken to blend in more with that specific set of peers.

Teenagers are also more inclined to experiment with drugs than people of most other ages because of how the prefrontal brain functions. This influences how they make decisions, and as a result, many teenagers make decisions without fully contemplating the long-term effects of their choices.

The mere act of trying a substance does not guarantee that a person will become addicted to it. Many often, when a person tries a substance out of curiosity, they cease using it when their interest has been sated.

Other elements connected to the drug’s function in the person’s life may also influence this choice, such as:
Drug availability.
Peer usage.
Family environment and drug history.
Mental health (conditions like depression and anxiety often encourage use) .

If circumstances align and the individual continues to take the drug, they may soon find themselves in the second stage of addiction.

Educate your teenager on the dangers of experimentation of substances. Stage 1 can quickly move over to Stage two

Is addiction a Process?
Addiction is a process for all that struggle with Substance Abuse. Addiction does not develop on its own over-night. Instead, it is the result of a long-drawn-out practice of substance usage that gradually alters how one view drugs and how their body responds to them.
The duration of each phase in this cycle can vary significantly based on the person, dosage and substance being used, it is very linear and follows the same progression for everyone.
The process of Addiction has a pattern, thus can be divided into the phases of addiction, beginning with a person’s initial use, and progressing all the way to addiction itself.
Stages of Addiction
1- Initiation
2- Experimentation
3- Regular usage
4- Risky usage
5- Dependence
6- Addiction
7- Criss / Treatment
Knowing each stage and the behaviours connected to it can help you determine if someone is at danger for or has already acquired an addiction.

The risk linked with drug usage increase with each stage, and it get harder and harder to stop.

Keep a look out on our social media where we will be discussing each stage of addiction and how to beat it !

How does Substance Abuse affect your Family relationship?

Substance abuse and addiction can damage family dynamics, break trust, and weaken communication. Family members who experience a loved one battling with a substance use disorder (SUD) often endure a host of painful emotions.

Equally frustrating is the hopelessness loved ones feel in response to substance abuse. Family members may feel at a loss when seeing a loved one caught in the grips of substance abuse.

However, family members can help their loved one achieve and maintain sobriety. Despite seeing a loved one struggle, family members can and ideally do play a major role in the treatment process. The role of family in addiction recovery is large and important.

Teens can become overwhelmed by addictive substances and strained relationships at home and may want to run away from home. Parental distress can seemingly push troubled teens into the arms of a substance to escape. Running away from home makes a teen vulnerable to sexual, economic, and emotional exploitation.

How do you help you child with SUD?
• Open the lines of communication.
• Discuss the negative affect of SUD with you child.
• Teach them on the dangers of Substance Abuse.

If you are struggling with your Teenager with Substance Abuse, Care Teenage Substance Abuse Clinic is here to help you and your child. Contact us today to speak to one of our Trusted employees regarding a Treatment plan for your child.

What is Substance Abuse and Addiction?

Substance abuse refers to excessive use of any substance. This can be alcohol, drugs, over the counter drugs or prescription drugs.
The key impacts of illicit drug use on society is the negative health consequences experienced by its members. Drug use also puts a heavy financial burden on individuals, families and relationships.
Cannabis remains the most widely used illicit substance among teens.
Injecting drugs carries a high risk of infection with bloodborne viruses such as HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C, and the sharing of needles and syringes is an important mode of transmission for those viruses.
If substance abuse is not treated early it tends to lead to substance use disorder, the inability to control the inner urge to use repeatedly.

Addiction is a neuropsychological disorder characterized by a persistent and intense urge to use a drug or engage in a behaviour that produces natural reward, despite substantial harm and other negative consequences. Repetitive drug use often alters brain function in ways that perpetuate craving, and weakens self-control.
Classic signs of addiction include compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli, preoccupation with substances or behaviours, and continued use despite negative consequences. Habits and patterns associated with addiction are typically characterized by immediate gratification coupled with delayed deleterious effects.

Risk Factors for High-Risk Substance Use can include.
• Intake of Highly addictive substances
• Early use
• Mental Health Issues
• Family history of substance use or addiction.
• Lack of parental involvement
• Association with substance using among peers.

Protective factors for High-Risk Substance Use can include.
• Family engagement and support
• Parental monitoring
• Education on Substance use
• Support in times of need.
• Good mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional health.
• Positive self-esteem.

How to Support your child

You can help protect your child against drug experimentation by giving them the facts before they want to experiment or find themselves in a situation where peer pressure is.

Substance abuse in teens can affect any family. By talking to your child about substance abuse and staying involved in their lives, you can help keep them safe.

Keep your child motivated in school, sports, and hobbies. They will have a good self-esteem in their life. If you realize that your child has friends who use drugs do your best as a Parent to encourage them to make friends with other Positive peers.

Kids who have friends that use drugs are likely to be pressured to use drugs.

Let you child know that you are there for them if they find themselves in a difficult situation where substances are present. You should be their safe person that they can call.

It comes down to education, teach your child on the negative impact that substance abuse will have on their emotional and physical health, as well as their future.

Make sure that you and your child has an open line of communication, they should not feel scared to talk about it with you. If your child is struggling with substance abuse, hold them accountable but also discuss treatment options with them.

Set boundaries with your child, this is for their own protection.

How to Approach them.

It is difficult to approach a teenager in a way, so they don’t feel attacked or accused of substance abuse. Substance use is common among teens, a passing phase but for some, substance use becomes repeated and can impact their lives in unwanted and significant ways.

Teens may be more eager to try drugs if they see their friends or people at home using substances.

Parents ask, but how do I approach my Child?

Teenagers will be more open to talk to someone when they feel safe. Your teen may get upset when you bring up the subject of substance use but you need to show them that it is a safe topic to talk about with you.

Try and remain calm and relaxed towards your Teenager. In the conversation try and keep an open mind, remember you started the topic so when the time comes, and you hear what you don’t like keep calm.

Don’t lecture or preach because they thought that they could talk to you. Rather practice active listening for a while and offer empathy and compassion towards them.

Let you child speak, take this time, and listen why they are misusing substances and what lead to it. When the time is right you will have a moment to speak and ask questions regarding your concerns for their health and safety.

Let you child know in that moment that you hear them. Being calm and relaxed will get you further than being confrontational about the situation.

Together you and your Teenager can discuss Treatment options for the future. Remember you are the parent, but how you react towards the situation will either cause your child to continue using or to go to rehabilitation.

How to Start Loving yourself in recovery

You have made the decision towards recovery; it is important in this journey to be kind, patient and loving towards yourself. This helps you focus on your current and future goals and not letting past mistakes take over. Kindness, patience, and love towards yourself will help build confidence in yourself making the right choices for your future.

Addicts are overly critical on themselves. Take a moment to acknowledge your faults to help you move forward, in this moment be kind to yourself because it is believed that being kind to yourself isn’t a selfish act. With admitting you have a problem and hoping for a better future is an act of self-compassion. Being a better version of yourself, you are allowing yourself the time to learn from past mistakes in addiction.

Patience and Compassion is what is needed to forgive yourself on past mistakes. Forgive yourself, you made the decision to seek for help. Taking care of your emotional and physical health is key when working towards recovery.
Addicts tend to neglect themselves when addiction takes over. When you see yourself in a bad light, you lose hope in your goals and dreams and even your worth. Asking for help also starts to feel impossible because you no longer think you deserve it, but you do!
These kinds of thoughts can stop you from asking for help and going for treatment.
You need to learn how to love yourself and treat yourself well when on your recovery journey.

Getting Motivated

How do you stay motivated and on track with your goal? It all comes down to good planning, realistic expectations, and a stick-to-it attitude.

Here is what you need to do,
Know your goal, write down your major goal. Your major goal is the ultimate thing you would like to see happen.

Make it specific, it is easier to plan for and master a specific foal than a vague one.

Make it realistic, people often abandon their goals because their expectations are unreasonable.

Write it down, put your goals in writing. Research has shown that writing down a goal is part of the mental process of committing to it.

Break it down, making any change takes self-discipline. You need to pay constant attention, so you don’t get sidetracked. Break your goals into small steps.

How do you stay motivated?

Addiction is a lifelong illness, so in recovery, there are two parts to motivation one to enter recovery and one to remain in recovery. Having the right motivation is a key aspect in overcoming addiction.

For motivation to be real, you must find the benefits of recovery to outweigh the costs. On top of that you need to genuinely believe in it.

Here is what you need to do,

Check in with your goal, you’ve broken your goal down into a series of mini-goals and daily task, check daily that you are on track.

Recommit to your goal if you slip up, we are all human if you slip up, don’t give up. Forgive yourself and plan for getting back on track.

Keep a stick-to-it attitude, visualize yourself achieving your goals. Give yourself positive feedback that you can do this.

Share with a friend or family, having supportive people around you can make all the difference in times when you don’t feel motivated.

Don’t Give Up
Ending an unhealthy behavior or creating a new , exciting one is all about taking responsibility for our lives. Finding the motivation to do it isn’t necessarily easy, but it is always possible.

You can stay motivated by writing down your goals, sticking to your schedule, and reminding yourself of what led you to set your goal in the first place.

Change is exiting- we’d all be very bored without it.

So what about kicking your substance abuse habit?
Just like creating a goal to reach your dream you need to create a goal to live a life free of drugs and alcohol. You can follow the exact same steps to live your life substance free!

A Low Self-Esteem

Your overall perception of yourself, complete with abilities, limitations and shortcomings becomes your self-esteem.
For many people struggling with low self-esteem is lifelong.

• Avoid eye contact with others.
• Rarely express your opinion in groups.
• Feel embarrassed about how you look.
• Have an unusually high fear of failure.
• Harm or injure yourself.

People with Low Self-Esteem use very specific criteria to determine their own worth, competence and adequacy. They tend to review past mistakes, disappointments, and failures as the measurement to prove their inferiority.

Minimizing faults and highlighting strengths and positive characteristics is a skill that can be developed. Doing this will build confidence, improve your overall mood, and build inner strength.

Consistent review, alongside a strong belief of these positive traits and qualities can help bring a healthier view of self and provide encouragement when bad days come along.

Low self-esteem can play a role in the development of certain mental health conditions. Having lower levels of self-esteem is linked to several mental health issues, including,
• Anxiety
• Eating disorders
• Social anxiety disorder
• Substance use
• Stress

Going from a Low to a Healthy self esteem can take time. But there are things you can do to help protect your mental well-being while taking steps to improve your self-regard.
• Self-Care.
• Focus on positive thoughts.
• Self-Acceptance and forgiveness.
• Do what makes you Happy.
• Get support from loved ones.

If you are experiencing symptoms of poor self-esteem, help is available. Consider talking to a healthcare provider or mental health professional to learn your treatment options.

Raising your self-esteem may take some time and effort. But over time, you can learn to better see and appreciate yourself for who you are.
