Cats can develop dental problems just like humans! 🐱🦷

Dental issues can lead to bad breath, painful teeth and gums, and even affect their overall health. Regular dental check-ups with your vet are crucial to catch any problems early on.
Keeping your cat's teeth clean can be achieved through a combination of a balanced diet, dental-friendly treats, and regular brushing with a feline-specific toothbrush and toothpaste. By prioritising your cat's dental health, you can help prevent pain, infection, and systemic diseases, ensuring they live a happy and healthy life!

Even in winter, regular grooming is important!

Brushing removes dead hair, helps distribute natural oils, and keeps coats healthy. For long-haired pets, it also prevents matting.

Extra bonus: it’s a great way to bond with your furry friend. 🐕🐈

We named him Alfie 💚

This tiny Duiker calf was found all alone, calling out for his mom – but sadly she was nowhere to be found. He was rescued by our wonderful client Caryl, who has extensive experience in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.

Caryl noticed that Alfie was extremely pale, so she brought him straight in for a check-up. We ran diagnostic blood smears to check for parasites, but fortunately none were found. The most likely cause of his weakness was severe anaemia from a heavy tick infestation.

Alfie received an iron supplement and vitamin injections to help build his strength, and then went back with Caryl to continue round-the-clock care. We’re happy to report that he is eating well, urinating and passing stool normally, and even managed to spend the afternoon standing on his own.

Rehabilitating a Duiker is no easy task – they are delicate antelope that require specialised feeding, meticulous parasite control, and a stress-free environment to give them the best chance at survival. With Caryl’s knowledge and dedication, Alfie is in the very best hands.

We’ll be keeping a close contact with Caryl and following this little fighter’s progress every step of the way. 🦌💚

WHY DOES MY PET NEED REGULAR BLOOD TESTS EVEN WHEN THEY SEEM HEALTHY?

Why routine blood tests matter—even when your pet seems perfectly healthy.
Did you know that many serious health issues in pets, like kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid problems, and even some cancers, can quietly develop long before any symptoms show up? That’s where regular bloodwork comes in. It’s like an early warning system, helping us catch problems before they become serious.

By testing while your pet’s feeling great, we can:
• Spot changes early and act fast
• Tailor treatments to their unique needs
• Improve long-term health and quality of life

Plus, regular testing helps us build a “normal” profile for your individual pet. That way, if something starts to shift—even subtly—we’ll notice it sooner. What’s normal for one pet might be a red flag for another, and having that history makes a big difference, especially as pets get older.

How often should you test?
• Young, healthy pets: usually once a year
• Senior pets (7+ for dogs, 10+ for cats): every 6 months is ideal
• Pets on long-term meds or certain breeds: may need more frequent checks

We know it can feel unnecessary when your pet’s bouncing around like usual—but early detection can save you heartache, stress, and big vet bills down the line. It’s a small step that makes a huge impact.

Has your pet ever had to wear a cone after a veterinary procedure? Long after your furry friend has recovered, that protective cone might still be sitting unused in storage.

The Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) is in need of these medical collars to help manage their expenses. "One of the bigger expenses we face is medical cones for our patients. Unfortunately, these often go unpaid, which puts a strain on our resources," explains the AACL.

If you have a used but still functional pet cone at home, please consider donating it at any TAH practice. We'll ensure it reaches the AACL, supporting their vital work caring for animals in need throughout our communities.
