How to choose and make your own face serum according to Ayurveda? and a few myths and misconceptions we need to address

When choosing to make our own Ayurvedic face serum there are a few basic principles to follow

1. What is our dominant primary current constitution- Dry (Vata), Aggravated Inflamed (Pitta), Oily (Kapha)
2. What are we trying to achieve - Hydration nourishment (Vata), Break out control, dryness, anti bacterial and cooling to help the inflammation (Pitta), Deep cleansing and oil balance also perhaps dryness (Kapha)
3. What season are you currently in, internally age etc and externally climate, humidity (Seasonal plants and herbs in your area)
4. And lastly is this product edible, our skin is a living organism if we can ingest and absorb it on the inside it can’t be good for us on the outside either (Please note this is strictly when making and choosing to use strictly natural products, in some cases it is useful for a higher level of treatment for skin and I totally respect and have done it myself and understand side that too)

Once you have figured out what it is you are looking for, the next step is to realise topical treatments are only one step in nourishing and balance in your skin routine, gut (diet) and hormones balance are the others.

I suffered for many years with skin imbalances, I do not have perfect skin and I have learnt to work towards loving and appreciating her in all her shapes and forms, but by understanding the symptoms my skin shows me I am much better at helping and treating her accordingly, flowing through the waves a lot more swiftly and smoothly. Why are rose petals so great for Pitta season ? šŸ„€

They are sweet, cooling and very soothing, and are great to mix with and take the edge off tomato’s (tomato rose petal pasta sauce coming soon). Tomato can be very sour and acidic, not great for Pitta dosha, especially in the effect of the gut. Rose petals will not totally neutralize this effect, but they help. So please save organic rose petals from your garden for those times when cooking with tomato.

Rose petals are also great to add to your skin care routine, either soak them in oils and make a tincture, or add them to creams, soaps, bath salts you name it, most topical breakouts are related to high pitta, as iv mentioned roses are sweet and cooling In nature and can help and calm the effects of inflammation.

Rose petal tea is also very good to sooth and calm down the body and mind, roses are known to have the highest vibrational frequency, as my beautiful friend Kerri of shared with me.

So when ever you get the chance save your roses and dry out their petals to add some wonderful pitta pacifying energy into your life this summer season.

Let’s talk KAPHA

So, I know we are moving through our Kapha spring season, gradually into our Pitta summer, but before we jumping into that, I found in not only my own personal life, but a couple of my friends and family too, there still seems to be some stagnant Kapha hovering around in our bodies.

So, firstly how does Kapha show up in the body.

SIGNS OF EXCESS KAPHA

* Heaviness - physically or emotionally
* Lethargy
* Excess weight (winter warmers)
* Congestion- excess mucus in the body

How do we balance out excess Kapha, firstly we have to think about kapha as an element and how it shows up in nature. Kapha is, wet, oily, heavy, cold, slow, moist and soft.

In Ayurveda opposite balanced out opposite, so in order to move this Kapha we need things such as activities, exercise, food, colours, smells etc that show up in nature that are, light, hot, dry, fast, airy, taste that are pungent are very good to burn excess Kapha too. Think hot and dry…turmeric. So here are some quick tips to burn off those last season blue, remember as in nature, as the season are naturally changing and things are moving, so will most of these shift eventually happen naturally. But here is a little boost incase your ready.

BALANCING OUT EXCESS KAPHA
* Get active, move your body everyday, specifically if you can, think fast energetic and sweaty exercises, remember dancing and swimming in the ocean, are also exercise šŸ˜Ž shake that b***y drape yourselves in salt.
* Food, think light, spicy, dry, hot and pungent like I mentioned. Most fruits and vegetables are great, but remember too much fruit can mean too much sugar so keep an eye on on that. Your basic go to, anything green, spinach, kale most lettuce, broccoli, celery, cauliflower etc, dry think oats. Juices salads, let oils less bulky heavy food, you get the drift
* Add abit of spice to your life whether it’s food spice or taking on a new hobby feel the vibrancy of life in all its colors smells and glory

Medicine - Dravya in Sanskrit

directly translates to substance

This morning in my yoga class something was brought up that I have been speaking about quite a lot lately, intention.

Intention to me is directly related to daily routines, we all think routine and discipline are huge tasks or big changes we need to make in our every day lives.

What Ayurveda says and what I’m trying to get everyone to learn, is intention is in everything we do, all those daily natural function we have become some what robotic to. How we talk, eat, walk, sleep and breathe, daily are all routines, by adding intention to these some what over seen things are what turn them into, Medicine.

Living a life of intention in the simplest forms, is living a life of Ayurveda and a life more in line with the rhythms of nature.

Lately I have been taking life a lot slower, I find balancing a business online, with the hustle and bustle of social media and the competitive nature of earning and becoming successful in this consumer driven market pace.

The actual essence of what I do and want to do for others can get lost, by slowing down, allowing life to flow and absorb more of the energy around me, I feel more connected and attuned to nature and my own medicine.

We are so accustomed to keep up with the pace and algorithms etc that we forget so often to absorb the quality of the now, the what is.

Iv been working on making some beautiful Ayurvedic products as well as opening up a treatment room in my own sacred space.

I’m loving the energy I’m putting into all these things, with slowing down comes so much love and peace and intention to be shared and as in nature….

ā€œThings of quality take up timeā€ 🌿
