As we celebrate International Nurses Day this week, we are proud to acknowledge Sister Christine and the incredible role she plays in the lives of people living with diabetes.
This article beautifully reflects not only the knowledge and expertise required of a Diabetes Nurse Educator, but also the compassion, patience and emotional support that often happens quietly
behind the scenes every day.
For many patients, managing diabetes can feel overwhelming, exhausting and lonely. Sister Christine’s ability to educate without judgement, support patients through difficult moments and empower them to take ownership of their health is what makes such a meaningful difference.
Everyday we see firsthand the care and dedication Sr Christine brings to every patient interaction, whether helping someone newly diagnosed navigate fear and uncertainty, supporting insulin pump
management, or simply listening when someone needs encouragement. Thank you, Sister Christine, for the lives you touch, the confidence you build, and the hope you bring to so many people living with chronic conditions.

This week we are celebrating International Nurses Day, and we want to take a moment to recognise and thank Sister Christine Manga for the incredible care, compassion and support she gives to our patients every single day. Living with diabetes or any chronic condition can often feel overwhelming, but Sister Christine has a remarkable way of making people feel understood, supported and empowered. Whether she is guiding a newly diagnosed patient, helping someone navigate the challenges of insulin management, or simply offering reassurance during a difficult time, she does so with patience, kindness and genuine dedication. Her passion for helping others goes far beyond clinical care. She walks alongside her patients on their health journey, encouraging them, educating them and reminding them that they are never alone.
Thank you, Sister Christine, for the countless lives you touch, for the comfort and confidence you bring to so many families, and for the difference you make every day. Happy International Nurses Day.

Across the world, nurses show up every day with quiet strength, compassion and unwavering commitment.
They care for patients in moments of vulnerability, often going beyond what is seen, offering not only clinical support, but kindness, reassurance and dignity. For those living with illness, especially chronic conditions, that care can make all the difference.
Today, we extend our heartfelt thanks to nurses everywhere who continue to serve selflessly and with such humanity.
Your work does not go unnoticed.

High blood pressure often develops without symptoms, yet its long-term impact on health can be significant.
This May, in support of blood pressure awareness initiative “May Measurement Month” led by the Southern African Hypertension Society, we encourage you to take a simple but important step: know your numbers.
Early detection allows for better management and can reduce the risk of serious complications, particularly for those living with diabetes, obesity, or other chronic conditions.
Speak to your healthcare provider about what your blood pressure means for your health.

A thoughtful moment captured at the 58th Annual Congress of the Society for Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes of South Africa. Dr Angela Murphy with Bridget McNulty, founder of Sweet Life Diabetes South Africa, sharing time together at a congress dedicated to advancing metabolic health, diabetes care, and patient support. Bringing together clinical expertise and patient advocacy is essential in shaping better outcomes from evidence-based treatment to real-world support for those living with diabetes. It was inspiring to be part of the conversations, collaborations, and continued commitment to improving metabolic health in South Africa.

Obesity is not a choice — it’s a global health crisis.
Today, 800 million people around the world are living with obesity. That tnumber includes 400 million children. And by 2035, projections show obesity affecting 1.9 billion people worldwide. Obesity is a recognised chronic isease, not a personal failure. It is also a major risk factor for other serious conditions,
including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers. Raising awareness helps us shift the conversation from blame to support, prevention, earlyintervention and compassionate care.
Together, we can change the narrative.
Together, we can change lives.

Obesity is often misunderstood as simply a matter of weight, but it is a complex medical condition that affects multiple systems in the body. It is linked to a number of serious health conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnoea, fatty liver disease and certain cancers. Understanding these connections helps patients and healthcare professionals recognise the importance of early diagnosis, prevention and appropriate treatment. Improving metabolic health, even with modest weight reduction, can significantly reduce long-term health risks and improve quality of life.

For many, flu is a temporary illness.
For others, particularly those living with diabetes, obesity, or other chronic conditions, it can carry a far greater risk.
Preventative care remains an important part of long-term health
management. Annual influenza vaccination, together with appropriate pneumococcal vaccination, can help reduce the risk of complications and support better health outcomes.
Speak to your healthcare provider about what is appropriate for you.
