*From Paramedic to Doctor in the Eastern Cape: A Journey of Dedication and Excellence*

Ms Zoleka Mtimkhulu’s journey is a powerful testament to dedication, resilience, and the transformative impact of opportunity. Employed as an Emergency Care Practitioner Paramedic with the OR Tambo Emergency Medical Services and stationed in Mthatha, Ms Mtimkhulu served her community on the frontlines of emergency care paramedic, often being the first point of contact for patients in their most critical moments.

Recognizing her passion for healthcare and her commitment to service, the Eastern Cape Department of Health afforded her the opportunity to further her studies in medicine at Walter Sisulu University. Through perseverance, discipline, and unwavering determination, she successfully completed her studies and has now qualified as a medical doctor, obtaining her MBChB degree.

From January 2026, Dr Mthimkhulu embarked on the next chapter of her professional journey as an Intern Doctor at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital. Her progression from paramedic to doctor not only reflects her personal ambition and hard work but also serves as an inspiration to colleagues across Emergency Medical Services and the broader health sector.

We proudly salute Dr Zoleka Mtimkhulu for this remarkable achievement. Her story embodies the values of service, growth, and excellence, and stands as a shining example of what can be achieved through commitment, opportunity, and support. The Eastern Cape Department of Health celebrates her success and wishes her every success as she continues to serve the people of our province and country with distinction.🚑🚨👌

EMS Responded to a Serious Truck Accident on the N10 near Paterson

Early this morning, Sunday, 11 January 2026, Eastern Cape Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a serious motor vehicle accident on the N10 near Paterson, within the Sarah Baartman District.

The incident involved a heavy-duty truck that overturned, resulting in the driver becoming trapped inside the vehicle. Upon arrival, EMS personnel established that the truck’s engine was resting on the driver’s right leg, making extrication extremely complex and hazardous.

Rescue teams from both the Sarah Baartman District and Nelson Mandela Bay Metro were immediately dispatched to the scene. Due to the size and weight of the vehicle, it became evident that the rescue would require specialised heavy-lifting equipment, including a crane, to safely free the patient.

In a strong demonstration of community cooperation, local farmers assisted by providing a TLB, which was used to stabilise and support the rescue efforts while further resources were mobilised.

As the extrication process proved challenging and progress was limited, a decision was taken to escalate the response. A Trauma Surgical Team from Livingstone Hospital was airlifted directly from the hospital to the scene to provide advanced surgical support and assist EMS rescue personnel during the extrication.

The Eastern Cape Department of Health commends the swift coordination between EMS, hospital-based trauma specialists, and community partners, which underscores the importance of multi-disciplinary collaboration in managing complex rescue operations.
