In the lead-up to and during September, discussions around 'deaf' awareness and hearing loss abound. However, it's concerning that some groups still fail to recognize that hearing loss or deafness cannot be claimed as the exclusive domain of any single group.
In South Africa, approximately 12.1 million people live with some form of hearing loss, with 3.6 million experiencing moderate or greater loss. The number of individuals with hearing disabilities ranges between 4 and 5 million, with approximately 600,000 using South African Sign Language. The majority—over 4 million people—rely on speech, alternate communication methods, assistive devices, texting, or a combination thereof. Diversity within the field of hearing loss must be respected.
It's unethical to suggest that one group has a monopoly on representing deaf-related issues. As illustrated, many functionally deaf individuals are aural and do not identify with Deaf culture in the same way as those who primarily use Sign Language.
Each group has its own valid perspectives. It's essential to advocate for the views and rights of your constituency without imposing your ideologies on others. In an era that values freedom of choice and association as universal human rights, it's crucial to respect the diverse needs and experiences within the field of hearing loss.
