It’s my privilege to work with each and every one of my phenomenal clients, to walk a path with them in their quest to become the truest version of themselves.

C O N S C I O U S L E A D E R S H I P || My mind is blown after spending a few days with and leadership institute at the magnificent this week, working with a group of incredibly talented facilitators, speakers, and smart, fun, friendly, and courageous leaders and top talent from a leading Africa-focused financial services organisation.

I learned so much from the deeply impressive force for good that is Cam Danielson from The Conscious Leadership Institute, and I’m deeply grateful to .roy.505 for the opportunity and for introducing us.

A highlight (apart from the blood-curdling roars of the lions roaring at a sanctuary 1km away) was an excursion to Sculpture Garden - you’re right, - it was truly spectacular. Food for the soul, especially the re-imagined replica of Tata Robben Island cell - same orientation and built to scale, but without a roof or a door…the possibility of freedom, liberation, breaking free.

It was my first visit to the Cradle of Mankind and I was deeply moved to think that this area is where human life is said to have begun - a treasure trove of early hominin fossils.

The days were long, and I enjoyed it immensely. Corporate wellbeing and personal growth remains a huge passion of mine, especially introducing mindfulness practices (yoga, breathwork) to support these leaders in showing up consciously in an increasingly complex world.

Thank you

M I N D F U L C O M M U N I C A T I O N || “Between what is said and not meant, and what is meant and not said, most of love is lost.” - Khalil Gibran

This quote always makes me sad because it is so true.

One of my huge passions is mindful communication (with couples or in the workplace) and sharing what I’ve learned about this life-changing approach.

When we learn how to have genuine conversations with others born out of curiosity, we’re likely to have fewer conflicts and misunderstandings. We can hear their point of view, clarify their thoughts and respond without defensiveness. This skill enhances all our relationships — whether at home or in the office place - and can help us to intentionally create deeper, safer, and positive connections.

T A M I N G A N X I E T Y || suggests that when your day is derailed by fear and worry, you might want to try to center your mind and become more anchored in the present moment.

Mindfulness techniques can help you do just that. Here are a few techniques to try:

😮‍💨 Deep breathing

Breathing is something so natural that we barely think about it. In fact, you breathe about 20,000 times a day without conscious thought. But when you’re anxious, your breathing quickens. Purposefully slowing your breaths helps you gain more control over your mental state. The breath, which yogis call “prana,” has powerfully calming effects on your brain and the rest of your nervous system. There are several breathing techniques you might try.

😮‍💨 Diaphragmatic, or belly breathing

Start by sitting comfortably or lying on your back.
Place one hand on the upper part of your chest and the other hand on your belly.
Relax your belly muscles.
Breathe in slowly through your nose until you feel your belly start to rise.
Breathe out slowly through slightly pursed lips and feel your belly fall.
Repeat.

🧘🏾 Meditation

Meditation takes deep breathing one step further, by combining it with mental focus. Research finds mindfulness meditation helpful for not only relieving anxiety symptoms, but also for improving our ability to cope with the stressors that life throws our way.

Want to learn more? Stick around for an online course coming up.

Deep breaths, be well,

Nicci

A W A R E N E S S || Behaviour change can’t happen before we learn how to observe and accept our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, without judgment.

From this place of mindful awareness, we can empower ourselves to then develop skills necessary for sustained changes.

I’m still learning every day. I may not ever have perfect awareness but I am confident that the more I practice resting in the witness, the greater the possibility of living my most intentional and aligned life.

For my peers professionally engaged with mindfulness, this looks to be outstanding. And it seems impossible - so I may well have missed something - but it’s donation-based, so hopefully many can attend and many more will donate to make it accessible to as wide an audience as possible. I’m signing up right now, with gratitude to Institute for Mindfulness South Africa 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

A L O N E vs L O N E L Y || Pascal continues: “We need to sit quietly in a room alone. Busyness is indeed the enemy of spirituality. We all need the discipline of paying attention to what is happening within ourselves – to examine our soul, who we really are. This is not about navel-gazing or self-indulgent analysis. It is about gathering resources in order to live authentically.

In the silence, what do you hear? What are you reminded of? What thoughts flood in? Do you have the courage to listen to what you hear?”
