Dr Farida Essajee, who completed her Paediatric Neurology Fellowship at SU in 2021, organised the Neuroscience Symposium on 15 April at the Kenyan Paediatric Association annual Scientific Conference in Mombasa, Kenya. Prof Regan Solomons presented 2 talks, TB Meningitis: From Death Sentence to Survivorship, and Saving Vision in TBM: The Power of Immune Modulation. Dr Magriet van Niekerk presented a talk on Dystonia in Children, and Dr Farida Essajee presented a talk on CMV Encephalopathy. The excellent symposium was well-organized, and well-attended with lots of interaction.

Last night, at the 12th Scientific Merit Awards, an evening of prestige and purpose brought together the very best of South African science.

The Gold Awards honoured Prof Yahya Choonara for advancing pharmaceutical science and drug delivery, Prof Jonathan Peter for his leadership in clinical immunology and lung health, Distinguished Prof Anneke Hesseling for her pioneering work in childhood tuberculosis, and Prof Nelesh Govender for strengthening surveillance and response to infectious diseases.
Each contributing work that has impact in clinics, through policy, and in the lives of people across the country.

The spotlight then turned to mid-career researchers in the Silver Award category.

Honouring Prof Omobola Okoh for her work in environmental and water quality science, Dr Simone Richardson for advancing biomedical research, Prof Regan Solomons for improving child health and nutrition outcomes, and Prof Olalekan Ayo-Yusuf for his contributions to public health and to***co control, research that continues to gain recognition nationally and internationally, with profound impact across the sector.

The SAMRC congratulates them and looks forward to their continued influence on the health research landscape.
