The main benefit of therapeutic reflexology in an oncology setting is to promote deep relaxation and activate the body's self-regulatory systems, which helps manage the intense physical and emotional toll of cancer treatments.

A cancer diagnosis changes a person’s life and can be a very stressful time. It can be especially overwhelming in a time of information overload, where different treatment options and contradictory 'health' advice is demanding your attention on every screen.

Therapeutic Reflexology is a noninvasive supportive tool that focuses on improving quality of life and easing discomfort.

Tips on how to get the most from your next reflexology treatment 👣💚

We want you to get the most from your reflexology treatment. Showing up is the first step in your healing journey, but if you're interested in getting the most from your treatment, here are some tips.

1. Booking your appointment: Let your therapist know why you're booking your appointment, whether it's for a specific condition or just to relax and rebalance.

2. What to wear: For your appointment, wear comfortable clothing. Ideally, it should be loose-fitting around the forearms and lower legs, as we sometimes work these areas, too.

3. Medical history: Before the treatment begins, we will review your medical history and the reasons for your visit. This information helps us to formulate the best treatment strategy for you.

Give feedback during and after the session, and feel free to ask any questions.

4. Drink water after the session to help eliminate metabolic waste released during treatment; rehydrate and replenish fluids and electrolytes in manipulated tissues, much like after exercise; boosts circulation: Improves blood flow to carry away waste and deliver fresh oxygen; and can help prevent or lessen mild post-treatment symptoms like headaches.

5. Post treatment care: Recommendations are made specifically to help you with your health and healing, and to ensure you get the best possible results from your treatment.

Be honest if you do not think the advice is practical or doable—there are always options

If you have any other questions, please leave them in the comments😊

Most people know reflexology goes deeper than a simple foot rub, but do you know how?

Therapeutic Reflexology is a both an art and science that works from the inside out by stimulating the entire nervous system. We aren't just rubbing your feett—we are working on specific reflex points that map directly to your organs, glands, and nervous system.

What makes a Therapeutic Reflexologist different?

Systemic Healing: Our intention is not just relaxation, but to stimulate your body’s self-healing mechanisms, allowing balancing and lasting healing to take place throughout your body.

Reflexology can be used as an assessment Tool. We study the physical manifestations on your feet (like calluses, temperature changes, or swelling) to identify stressed or imbalanced organs or systems.

Professional Registration: In South Africa, Therapeutic Reflexologists are registered with the AHPCSA (Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa). This rigorous registration requires adherence to a strict scope of practice, including:

-Verbal and physical patient assessment.
-Continual professional development (CPD).
-Inter-disciplinary consultation and referral.

If you'd like to find out more, I've written a blog post elaborating on the differences: https://reflexologylife.co.za/2025/04/14/the-difference-between-reflexology-and-a-foot-massage/

New on the blog: How Reflexology Helps to regulate the endocrine system.

*How Reflexology Influences Hormone Regulation*

- Endocrine Reflex Points: Reflexologists target pressure points on the feet corresponding to endocrine glands, such as the pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, and reproductive organs. This pressure aims to stimulate these glands, helping them function more effectively and balance hormone levels.

- Promotes Relaxation: Reflexology activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which supports relaxation (rest and digest) and reduces stress. Lowering stress levels can help decrease the production of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, allowing the body to regulate other hormones better.

- Enhances Circulation: Reflexology techniques can improve blood circulation. Better circulation ensures that hormones, oxygen, and nutrients are delivered more efficiently to cells and organs, supporting overall hormonal health and function.

- Supports Overall Well-being: Reflexology promotes balance and relaxation, which helps the body heal and function efficiently. When the body is relaxed, it can better regulate itself, including its hormonal systems.

*How to Use Reflexology for Hormone Balance*

- Consult a Registered Reflexologist: Seek out a fully qualified and experienced reflexologist who can assess your needs and provide a treatment plan specific to your needs.
- Consider a Course of Treatment: Reflexology can have a cumulative effect, so a series of sessions over several weeks or months may be necessary to achieve significant results.
- Incorporate Lifestyle changes: If necessary, your reflexologist may recommend specific lifestyle changes or things to incorporate into your daily life, such as diet, movement, stress management techniques, and environmental changes. Combining reflexology sessions with these lifestyle changes enhances their effects on hormone regulation.

Eunice Ingham (1889 - 1974) is well known in the field of reflexology and is regarded as the "Mother of Modern Reflexology". She refined the foundational work of Dr. William Fitzgerald, called "Zone Therapy", which involved applying pressure to different zones in the body to alleviate pain in the related area.

Ingham, a Physiotherapist, spent years meticulously mapping the entire body onto the feet, creating a detailed foot chart, which is still used today.
The fundamental principle of reflexology is that the feet are a microcosm of the entire body.

Ingham travelled across the United States, giving lectures and seminars to both medical and non-medical practitioners. She believed that reflexology was a simple and effective tool to promote health and well-being.

She also founded the International Institute of Reflexology to protect and preserve her original work and ensure proper teaching of reflexology.

Do you want to book a therapeutic reflexology treatment but have no idea what to expect? Let me take you through your first consult with me.

There are MANY reasons to book a therapeutic reflexology treatment — from managing stress and headaches to addressing specific concerns like constipation, sinus issues, or even infertility. Or perhaps you're simply feeling frustrated after trying other wellness avenues without much success. Whatever your reason, you are welcome here.

First we'll have a chat and talk about what may be concerning you and I'll ask you a few questions about your health and well-being. Then, once I've answered your questions and have a bit more information from you, the treatment begins.

I'll use specific massage and pressure techniques on the reflexology points on your feet, and sometimes on your hands, face, or ears, to help restore balance within your body's internal pathways.

What makes reflexology so fascinating is that it can also be a diagnostic tool. Your feet can reveal areas of congestion or imbalance in the body, giving us clues about what's going on in the body.

After the session, I'll share my insights and provide recommendations. If I believe you would benefit from another additional form of care, I may refer you to another health professional.

Did you know that therapeutic reflexology is registered with the South African Allied Health Counsel and recognised by most medical aids in South Africa.

To book your own session with me, you can visit my website www.reflexologylife.co.za and get more info about me and my practice.

Migraines, headaches, neck tension, eye strain? Reflexology has been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of headaches and migraines over time.

Many patients report an immediate reduction or alleviation of symptoms after their treatment.

Chronic or constant headaches are not "normal" and you should seek medical attention, especially if they are:

- Sudden and severe on onset
- Accompanied by fever and stiff neck
- Change in headache patterns
- Persistent or worsening of pain

Therapeutic Reflexologist - Jasmine Steyn

Reflexology is a holistic therapy that promotes health and well being. It stimulates the body’s self-healing mechanisms and eliminates toxins. Specific reflex points on the feet (hands and ears) correspond to different organs and parts of the body. Stimulation of these points increases blood flow, oxygen & nutrients, to the corresponding organ or body parts.

I qualified as a Therapeutic Reflexologist at the end of 2014, and have been practising ever since. I decided to study reflexology after I realised that reflexology wasn’t just a fascinating therapy, but also a very effective one.

I started off with my private practice in Springs. In 2017 I started working at corporate companies around Johannesburg. I also offer mobile reflexology services within a 30km radius of Germiston.

I have a huge passion for helping people achieve optimal health and wellness through reflexology and lifestyle.
