Muscle & Nutrition Science by Veeraj Goyaram

Muscle & Nutrition Science by Veeraj Goyaram University of Cape Town graduate-Exercise and Nutritional Scientist with particular interest in nutritional supplements for sports performance & wellness.

I am originally from the island of Mauritius (Roche Bois) but now call Cape Town, South Africa home. My passion for exercise, nutrition, bodybuilding and the science brought me to the University of Cape Town where I conducted a research-based masters degree in exercise science at the UCT Research Unit for Exercise Science & Sports Medicine and Sports Science Institute of South Africa where I spent about 5 years. My research which earned me a distinction, looked at the influence of nutrition on gene expression in muscle, specifically the gene which codes for the Glucose Transporter 4 protein (GLUT4). This research is highly significant for diabetics and athletes. I have published book chapters on diabetes/ exercise, papers in the American Journal of Physiology, Endocrinology and Metabolism. I was the first scientist worldwide to show that exercise and nutrition changes the structure of the GLUT4 gene to allow or repress gene function. I also spoke about my research in scientific conferences in Europe and South Africa. I now serve as the Director of Research & Development for Functional Nutrition International Pty. Ltd, an avant-garde company based in Cape Town. I have experience in this field at all levels: as merchandiser in supplement shops, doing promotions, university-based scientist, author and director of R&D. I am the webmaster of Bodybuilding Mauritius & South Africa, the premier portal in the science of bodybuilding of both countries.

Recent research conducted at Harvard University found that people who had the most dairy fat in their diet had about a 50 percent lower risk of diabetes.

This research is interesting because it started in the late 80s and spanned 20 years during which researchers measured dairy fat consumption via indicators in their blood, and tracked whether they developed diabetes.

In explaning this effect, the researchers suggest that the higher fat intake may make people less hungry to eat other foods as there's evidence that when people consume more low-fat dairy, they eat more carbohydrates as a way of compensating.

For a long time people have been taught that saturated fat, like the type found in dairy products, is bad for health.

Definitely, it is time to reconsider.

Training a muscle twice a week is better than than training it once.

Let me explain:
Instead of doing 12 sets for biceps every Monday.
Do 6 sets on Monday and then 6 sets on Thursday.

Why is it better?
When you train a muscle you activate protein synthesis in the muscle. When you train the muscle twice a week you activate protein synthesis twice.

Any questions or assistance? PM me!
