Cape Town is currently experiencing extremely high temperatures, and while sunny days are part of our beautiful lifestyle, prolonged heat can become dangerous if we’re not careful.
Heat stroke is a serious medical emergency that occurs when the body can no longer regulate its temperature.
⚠️ Warning signs of heat stroke include:
• A very high body temperature
• Hot, red or dry skin
• Severe headache
• Dizziness or confusion
• Nausea or vomiting
• Rapid heartbeat
• Loss of consciousness
If someone shows these symptoms, seek medical help immediately at our 24Hour Accident and Emergency Unit.
Simple ways to prevent heat stroke:
• Drink plenty of water throughout the day
• Avoid direct sun exposure during peak heat (11am – 4pm)
• Wear light, loose clothing and a hat when outdoors
• Use sunscreen and stay in shaded or air-conditioned areas where possible
• Check in on elderly family members, children, and those with chronic conditions, as they are more vulnerable to heat-related illness
Our bodies work hard to keep us cool — give them the support they need during this heatwave.
Stay hydrated, stay cool, and take care of one another.
