PREDIMED, one of the largest interventional dietary trials ever performed, followed more than seven thousand men and women at high cardiovascular risk randomized into different diet groups. One group received a free half pound of nuts every week for four consecutive years. Compared with other groups, the added-nuts group appeared to cut their stroke risk in half. And, regardless of which group participants were assigned to, those eating more nuts each day had a significantly lower risk of dying prematurely overall. Watch the video “PREDIMED: Does Eating Nuts Prevent Strokes?” at https://bit.ly/2QtIk0v to learn more.

Additionally, people who ate more than three servings of walnuts per week appeared to cut their risk of dying from cancer in half. Today is Earth Overshoot Day - As of today, we have used up all the natural resources that Earth can sustainably supply for 2021 - overshooting by 5 months.

Take a look at this image to see the impact of different countries from around the globe, where does your country sit?

To help to protect our planet and move the date of Earth Overshoot Day we must address our food choices. If we reduced global meat consumption and consumed more of our calories from plants, we could drastically reduce the amount of resources we need to sustain our planet.

What’s your diet’s carbon footprint?

Credit:

Eliminating meat and dairy products is one of the biggest ways to reduce your environmental impact.

Why asparagus?

Produce that requires air freight tends to have exceptionally high GHG. This would include a number of tender fruits and vegetables.

“Air freighting is a lot more carbon-intensive than shipping or road transport,” says Alexander Kasterine, head of the Trade and Environment Programme at the International Trade Centre (a joint agency of the United Nations and the World Trade Organization).

The reason? Energy use. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, air-freighting takes 50 times the energy of shipping by sea, 33 times that of rail transport, and four times that of truck transport.

For the first time in human history, the stability of nature can no longer be taken for granted.

"Wild animals suffer not only the collateral damage of meat-related deforestation, drought, pollution and climate change, but also direct targeting by the meat industry. From grazing animals to predators, native species are frequently killed to protect meat-production profits. Grass-eating species such as elk, deer and pronghorn have been killed en masse to reserve more feed for cattle. Important habitat-creating animals such as beavers and prairie dogs have been decimated because they disrupt the homogenous landscapes desired by livestock managers.

“To support a global rise in per-capita meat-eating, livestock farming continues to expand, shrinking and fragmenting natural habitats in the process. And when cramped predators adapt by preying upon livestock, some ranchers go to extreme measures to keep them away, such as strapping pouches of neurotoxins to the necks of grazing lambs, or calling upon the United States Department of Agriculture to shoot down predators from government helicopters.”

More than 175 threatened or endangered species are imperiled by livestock on federal lands, where livestock grazing is promoted, protected and subsidized on 270 million acres of our public lands in 11 western states. Livestock grazing — not including the large portion of agriculture devoted to cattle production or other forms of meat production — is among the greatest direct threats to imperiled species, affecting 14 percent of threatened or endangered animals and 33 percent of threatened or endangered plants.

In addition, at the behest of ranchers, a federal agency known as Wildlife Services shoots, traps, and poisons millions of animals every year, including wolves and foxes and bears in National Forests, to make more room for cows and other ranched animals."

💧When we get dehydrated💧, our blood volume actually shrinks. This drop is detected by our kidneys, which then release an enzyme into our bloodstreams that triggers the cascade that results in the formation of a hormone called angiotensin, which in turn, causes us to become thirsty and constricts our blood vessels to raise our blood pressures to compensate for the diminished blood volume.⁣⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Credit: .jackedonplants

But that isn’t all the angiotensin does. If you drip the hormone onto human fat cells in a petri dish, they start piling on more fat.[1]⁣⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This may explain why those with higher angiotensin levels in their bloodstreams tend to be heavier. [2]⁣⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The science clearly shows that those who don’t drink enough water end up with elevated angiotensin levels, which will lead to weight gain. [3]⁣⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Well-hydrated individuals experienced the best of both worlds: increased fat burning ⁣and decreased protein breakdown.[4]⁣⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
DRINK UP LADIES! 💦⁣ Aim for around 10 cups per day minimum or a couple of liters.⁣⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It’s kind of like a cake, but without all of the excess added processed sugars!

If you’ve got a major sweet tooth, save this recipe for later! 📲

Ingredients:

1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup plant-based milk

1/2 fresh orange
1/8 tsp cinnamon
A few dairy-free chocolate chips or cacao nibs
Sprinkle of pink Himalayan salt

2. Preheat the oven to 375º.

3. Mash the banana in the bowl you will use to bake the oatmeal.

4. Add the cinnamon & the baking powder. Mix.

5. Add the blended oat flour. Mix.
Add the orange juice & plant-based milk. Mix.

6. Bake for 35 minutes at 375º degrees fahrenheit.

7. Let sit for 10-15 minutes before serving.

Enjoy!

When did you first become aware of carnism? Share your story below!

Credit:

You can watch the full “The Secret Reason We Eat Meat” video via the link in their bio!

From the video: We often assume only vegans and vegetarians bring their beliefs to the dinner table. But the only reason many of us eat cows but not dogs, for example, is because we do have a belief system when it comes to eating animals. When eating animals is not a necessity—which is the case for many people in the world today—then it is a choice. And choices always stem from beliefs. So what my research uncovered is that there is an invisible belief system that conditions us to eat certain animals. And I named that system carnism.
