Our Accreditation Manager, Warren Oxford-Huggett, clocked 700km across central KZN in three frosty days, meeting the incredible teams at Estcourt Hospice Association, Ladysmith Hospice association , Duduza Care Centre, and Philanjalo in Tugela Ferry.

From bumpy backroads to boots-on-the-ground caregiving, these sites reveal the beating heart of community-based palliative care. Adapted to local needs, rooted in compassion, and driven by dedicated teams, this is care shaped by South Africa’s vast and vibrant landscape.

Challenges are all over, but despite these, patients and families are served.

At the recent Palliative Care Conference, Sister Kash Raghubar, Head of homecare at Highway Hospice in Durban, reflected on the vital role of collective compassion in caring for the sick, orphaned, and impoverished.

Sister Raghubar highlighted the economic challenges many of their patients face, especially those from rural areas or without access to private care. Despite these hardships, she emphasised that hope lay in community networking, with volunteers, churches, and neighbours stepping forward to provide care, wellness checks, and dignity where systems often fell short.
