From the book:

"In reaction to society's rigid dogmas and conditional love—'behave this way or else be cast out’—many spiritual seekers have swung to the opposite extreme, now claiming that almost any thought or impulse is 'intuition' and dismissing any suggestion to the contrary as judgment or limitation.

Again, it needs to be reiterated: there is no automatic safeguarding mechanism to recognize when thoughts and visions are guidance versus when it’s the ego’s preferences claiming to be guidance. It is fantastically easy to get tricked.

Though it is reckless to assume that all New Ager’s actions are based on idolizing such a false god as themselves, for protection I would strongly advise that genuine seekers proceed with caution around those who take pride in their spiritual practice, abilities or knowledge.

Instead, if one is serious about discovering what is True, do what all the great religions recommend: continue deepening and strengthening your own contemplative practice, devote yourself to a Savior (guru, enlightened teacher) with a proven track-record, and develop an ever-intensifying dedication to surrendering to God’s will. As a general rule, the more one relies on intuition for guidance, the greater should one’s humility and commitment to selfless service be."

From the book: "Being present with one’s life as it gets tossed from obsession to revulsion to attraction to disgust to indifference—round and round and round—is the only guaranteed way of revealing just how misery-inducing one’s reactionary patterns really are.

For most humans, though, it will take an absurdly long time before waking up to their own wretched mind, let alone before becoming willing to take the steps necessary to free themselves from its trappings.

Consider yourself lucky if you see clearly the problem of attaching to duality, for such is a prerequisite to begin climbing the spiritual ladder back to Unity."

From the book:

"It is important to remember that, by spiritual law, nothing is intransmutible. Though some patterns are harder to break than others (especially when brain injuries or physical toxins lodged in the nervous system are involved), there is no legitimate excuse for not doing everything within one’s power to become less greedy, spiteful and compulsive."

From the book:

"It takes real, deep, honest self-inquiry to discover (let alone admit) that one’s experience, even when it appears quite ‘good’ on the surface, is actually frothing with ‘not enough-ness’ underneath.

The ego is masterful at presenting one’s taṇhā—cravings and aversions—as neutral observations. This is especially the trap for the beginner and intermediate spiritual seeker, who, after making some headway in healing and surrendering, falsely assume they have discovered a stable state free from such clinging.

This isn't to say that initial peace is false—only that staying humble in the face of what one believes one has attained serves the seeker well, for the Path, and its companion states of contentment, will continue to deepen for some time to come, and what one considers peace today might actually be seen as suffering tomorrow.

Besides, even if such a moment is authentic peace, in virtually all such cases, it is a temporary moment of balance that will soon exit stage left. And when it does, if the seeker has identified with being the one who has found the peace, disappointment is sure to follow."

What becomes of those long-forgotten moments?

The beautiful sunset last year or the random Tuesday night? Do they get permanently erased? That’d be a real shame, wouldn’t it? All those tiny joys, trials, and revelations gone for good…

From the book:

"Because the unawakened mind is blind to itself, it almost always overlooks the extent to which it complains about the present. So common are the thoughts 'this moment would be ever-so-slightly better if only x were y' that it fails to see them at all, oblivous to how much discontentment is floating around."

From the book:

"The nervous system and brain have developed very clever ways of approximating the past in order to make survival-oriented decisions in the present, compressing petabytes of raw experience into manageable, actionable schemas we’ll call impressions. Impressions are compressed patterns—templates the nervous system uses to navigate material reality without having to reprocess everything from scratch."

From the book:

"It can take some digging and radical honesty, but what one inevitably discovers is that, actually, any desire, be it superficial or deep, apparently selfish or apparently selfless, is ultimately the desire to start (or stop) feeling a certain sensation."

From the book:

"In order for one to ascend the mountainous heights where Bliss is located, one needs to forsake all identifications and false idols. All identifications and false idols, not just the obvious ones like possessions and fame. One needs to be stripped bare of any and all ideas that something like safety, being right, being seen, being held, or even being holy will bring lasting fulfillment. They won’t. Actually, they can’t. At best these identifications kick the can down the road for a future you to let go of. At worst, they generate an intense, black hole of misery that even light cannot pe*****te."

From the book:

"Because humanity is ignorant about the degree and scope of its ignorance, we may as well be at 0% understanding, because, again, complete comprehension would require accounting not just for the unknown, but for the unknown unknowns—which is impossible by definition."
