A forever and much valued teacher of mine from my global dance community is visiting South Africa at the moment for the first time in 11 years. The last time Ya'Acov Darling Khan was here I was still the organiser of our African school of Movement Medicine, which feels like a lifetime ago.
I am half way through his tour which I am gratefully joining without any of my many past roles as leader, teacher, organiser, assistant etc. It's my first time just simply dancing on this continent as me a dancer and learner; with strong intent: to be a humble and open student. To stay teachable. To be sure to keep dancing and staying open to the possibility that there are new ways to move and explore my inner and outer landscape throughout my life. The ego wants to think it's done with its work, embodied, ready, better than. But this is just one story and trick it plays on us. we are never done with the work of self-accountability and growth. if we think we are, it's time to step off any podium we are on and join the dancefloor of life again, as a student, to remember that there is always more to learn. Always companions to learn from and dance with.
Despite having danced for thousands of hours with many teachers around the world, over decades, then teaching myself for many years, there is the simple truth that we are all still learning for as long as we live. The landscape changes and there is Always, more material, new.terrain to encounter.both within and without of course.
We are never done or 'there' at the point where we are able to do it alone, where we don't need honest companions, and community to keep us accountable and aware of our own learning edges and shadows.
We have to keep open to learning. We must stay forever, .
Huge gratitude to Ady Lor and Anja Bock for organising this series of events. Gratitude to the many dangers that said yes all those years ago and keep coming back. And the new ones saying yes! And as always to and for their courage to be who they are always growing and improving and their guidance in what it means to be responsibly free. I so look forward to the Phoenix on African soil.
