Did you know, your child’s school bag could be affecting their posture and spinal health?

A 2023 review on “The Physical Ergonomics of Body Posture When Wearing Bags” highlights how the weight, style, and way your child carries their bag can significantly impact their spine.

Research-backed recommendations:
- Ensure they wear their backpack on both shoulders to keep their body balanced
- Keep bag weight under 10% of your child’s body weight to reduce the load on their spine
- Clear out unnecessary items to prevent excess weight in the backpack

Small changes = big protection for your little one’s spine.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes joint pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility, impacting daily life.

While medical management is essential, chiropractic care plays a supportive role by addressing associated musculoskeletal
discomfort, supporting movement, and helping manage postural strain and muscle tension, always with care adapted to the individual.

Good posture isn’t just about looking confident; it’s about keeping your spine healthy and your body moving freely.

Chiropractors know that small daily habits can make a big difference:

• Keep your shoulders back and relaxed
• Align your ears over your shoulders when sitting or standing
• Take regular breaks from sitting - stretch and move!
• Support your lower back with proper seating
• Strengthen your core to help maintain natural spinal curves.

Your spine supports your entire body - treat it well!

If you experience pain or discomfort, a CASA-registered chiropractor can guide you with personalised advice and exercises to improve your posture and prevent future issues.

Your spine, your health, your posture. Choose chiropractic first.

My chiropractor clicks my back, so why can’t I just do it myself?

Or better yet, get a friend or family member to do it for me.

Chiropractors are extensively trained in the art of adjustments.

They study for many years to learn safe and effective methods to administer such treatment. By getting your friends or family to “click” your back you are putting yourself at risk of injury.

Here are some reasons why you should only be adjusted by a licensed professional:
1. They have received their education and training at a registered tertiary institution such as DUT or UJ.
2. You will receive the correct assessment and diagnosis of the problem at hand.
3. They will assess the necessary contra-indications for manipulative therapy and the safety based on the above findings.
4. You will receive follow-up care that is formulated specifically for you and your problem.

While family and friends may mean well, they typically lack the specialised training and knowledge required to perform safe and effective adjustments.

This could lead to unintended consequences, such as muscle strain, joint injury, or exacerbation of an underlying condition.

It’s always advisable to consult a registered chiropractor who can assess your specific needs, provide an accurate diagnosis, and deliver appropriate care based on their expertise and training.
