Thursday Thoughts đź’

Tinnitus is a medical condition estimated to affect more than 10 to 15% of people. It involves hearing a ringing, buzzing, clicking, or similar type of sound that does not have an external source.

One promising field of research is neuromodulation. In fact, the first noninvasive device for the treatment of tinnitus had recently been approved by the FDA!

In South Africa, we have access to SONO, a device created by CleanHearing in Austria! This device is CE approved and has been assessed by the South African Health Products Regulatory Association.

This is us an exciting new development in tinnitus treatment.

Get in touch with us to learn more about the effectiveness of this treatment for tinnitus and how neuromodulation works!

Hearing aids come in many different sizes and styles and with different power needs. Larger hearing aids require larger batteries. Additionally, hearing aids for people with severe or profound hearing loss typically require more power and larger batteries.

There are four sizes of hearing aid batteries available on the market. The sizes from smallest to largest are: 10, 312, 13 and 675.

Color-coding for disposable hearing aid batteries is used because size differences may be hard to notice and difficult to remember, battery packaging is color-coded so finding and purchasing the correct ones is easier.

Size 10 batteries - yellow
Size 312 batteries - brown
Size 13 batteries - orange
Size 675 batteries - blue

Labyrinthitis and vestibular neuritis are types of inner ear infection that affect your balance. They usually get better on their own within a few weeks.

The most common symptoms of labyrinthitis are:

- dizziness or feeling that everything around you is spinning (vertigo)
-feeling unsteady and off balance – you might find it difficult to stay upright or walk in a straight line
feeling or being sick
hearing loss
-ringing in your ears (tinnitus)

The symptoms of vestibular neuritis are very similar, but it does not cause hearing loss or tinnitus.

Symptoms can start suddenly. They may be there when you wake up and get worse as the day goes on.

The symptoms often ease after a few days.

You'll usually get your balance back over 2 to 6 weeks, although it can take longer.

Do you currently suffer with tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the perception of sound without an external source. It may be a symptom of ear disease but may also occur with systemic disorders such as hypertension. It is common and occurs in 15% of all people. It is more common in the elderly and may be accompanied by hearing loss and dizziness.

At Durban audiology we offer a range of tinnitus treatment option.

We begin by performing a range of diagnostic assessments to discover what the cause of the tinnitus might be.

We thereafter create a program that is tailored to your needs.
Please feel free to give us a call to discuss the options available to you!
