About Me & the Page...

I am currently registered as a student at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. I am enrolled in a MSc in Medicine (Child Health Community Paediatrics). I am passionate about infant, young child and maternal health. This started in my intern year (2006) when I chose to evaluate, on a small scale, the integrated management of childhood nutrition (IMCI) programme at a community health centre. My passion grew when I coordinated the Baby Friendly hospital initiative (BFHI) programme in my community service year. I am currently reassessing the practical implementation of the treatment of severe malnutrition in my hospital. Having the opportunity to work with and learn about these programmes helped me to understand the framework and basic grounding needed for programmes to function efficiently. I feel that although programmes such as these exist, there is still so much potential to expand and integrate them with other parts of healthcare. I use this page, twitter& a wordpress blog to keep myself and others up-to-date about a variety of areas of Maternal & Child Health. Please feel free to comment on any of the posts.

Victory and Thank you!๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰

Final update on the Triplets & Family:

So after more than 2 years of fighting various government departments the family of the triplets have received their birth certificates and child support grants.

Over the last 2 years we had help from Children's Institute, University of Cape Town , South African Human Rights Commission, Johannesburg, Public Protector South Africa

Achievements:
Rectified Moms duplicated ID book
Registration & Birth certificates for Triplets
Child support grants for triplets and older sibling

I would like to thank everyone who helped out by donating items or money!!
YOU have helped this family through the last 2 years of life!!
The family and I am overwhelmed by, and so grateful for your generosity.

Thanks Again,
Neil Stephen
The Seed Fund

Update on the Triplets:
They are healthy and well thanks to the seed fund community. Without the compassion of the donors so far - the lives of this family would be very different. For this we are extremely grateful!
They have recently celebrated their 1st birthday!!
We still face challenges:
1. Triplets born a year ago have not been registered โ€“ no birth certificates to date
2. Triplets & 9 year old sister have not received a child support grant for a year (An accumulated value in excess of R21 000 Lost)
3. Mother of the triplets has not had her ID document duplication resolved in a year โ€“ therefore no ID for
4. No alternatives offered for birth registration
5. No attempt to support the family in any way in light of this situation (mother lives in a shack with 4 x children and no income)
We are actively pursuing the resolution of all the above problems.
We have successfully contacted the Public Protector and the Human Rights Commision.
We are asking the Seed Fund Community to help us support this family until their grants are issued.
We would like to commit to R440 rand per child (triplets = R1320) per month.
Any contribution would be appreciated!!
If you have any contacts that deal with these issues that would be wonderful too.
Kindest Regards,
Neil

Today we celebrate the lives of those we strive to feed and save.

17 November is World Prematurity Day and this year marks the 11th year of commemorating this special group.

While we know that we all have a long way to go to properly support these babies and their families, we want to take today to celebrate the progress we have made in our sphere. We are proud to have been able to continuously provide donor breast milk to qualifying premature babies in our surrounding hospitals throughout the pandemic.

Our efforts to provide life line donor breast milk to these vulnerable premature babies would not be possible without our wonderful donors who selflessly donate their excess breast milk to help feed these babies when their own mother's milk is not available.

We would like to urge our community to help us create awareness on the need for donor breast milk, spread the word and help us to better support these vulnerable and valuable lives.

World Prematurity Day ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿฝ

We are re-visiting this today as we celebrate world prematurity day๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰

We are inviting you to be a part of an awesome initiative. A simple piece of material - a mom to baby wrap, also known as a kangaroo mother care wrap/pouch - can make a huge difference to the wellbeing of both newborn babies and thier moms (or even dads)!!

Help a newborn get the best start to life!
We would like this initiative to be ongoing to help as many moms and babies as possible.
