📘 Prostate Health Series — Post 1

What Is the Prostate & Why Does It Matter?

The prostate is a small gland — about the size of a walnut — but it plays a big role in men’s health. As men age, the prostate naturally changes, and these changes can lead to symptoms or increase certain health risks.

Here are the basics every man should know:

🔹 What the Prostate Does
• Produces seminal fluid
• Helps with ej*******on
• Supports reproductive function

🔹 How It Changes With Age
• Grows gradually from 40+
• Can cause urinary symptoms
• Becomes more susceptible to inflammation and cancer

🔹 Why Awareness Matters

Early detection of prostate problems — from benign enlargement to cancer — leads to better outcomes. Understanding the prostate is the first step in protecting your health.

📅 Follow our series begining this Movember as we unpack everything from symptoms and screening to treatment options and lifestyle choices.

Hey Friends! Ever wondered if dual antiplatelet therapy is more effective than going solo after coronary-artery bypass grafting? 🤔 Well, the TACSI trial recently conducted a fascinating study about this where participants were either given ticagrelor plus aspirin or just aspirin alone. After 12 months of observation, they found that there was no significant difference in the primary outcome (which included death, a heart attack, or a stroke) between the two groups. 💔💊

Nope, the cocktail of ticagrelor and aspirin did not decrease the risk of the above outcomes nor did it increase the risk of major bleeding. Whew! 😅 So, the takeaway here ✍️: adding ticagrelor to aspirin doesn't provide any additional benefit for most patients after CABG in acute coronary syndrome cases. This could well influence future guidelines for antiplatelet therapy in such patients!

If this piqued your interest, you can learn all about it here (don't worry, it's a friendly read without too much medical jargon!) So, let's understand more, spread the word and ensure our loved ones are getting the right type of therapy they need! 🙌💕

💎💧 Kidney Stone Prevention: Your Complete Recap 💧💎

Over the past few weeks, we’ve shared practical, evidence-based steps to help you protect your kidneys and reduce your risk of painful kidney stones. Here’s your full prevention checklist 👇

✅ Your Kidney Stone Prevention Essentials

💧 Stay well hydrated
Aim for 2–2.5 litres of urine daily. Lemon water helps boost citrate.

🧂 Cut back on salt
Hidden sodium increases urinary calcium and stone risk.

🥛 Get enough calcium — from food
Dairy & leafy greens help reduce oxalate absorption.

🥗 Be smart with oxalate-rich foods
Pair foods like spinach, nuts, beets, chocolate, and tea with calcium.

🍖 Balance protein & sugar intake
Moderate animal protein. Reduce added sugars and soft drinks.

⚖️ Maintain a healthy weight
Regular activity and balanced meals support kidney health.

🍋 Boost citrate naturally
Citrus fruits help prevent crystals from forming stones.

💊 Use supplements carefully
High-dose Vitamin C raises stone risk. Only supplement if prescribed.

🩺 Work with your doctor
Stone analysis & 24-hour urine testing guide personalised treatment.

✨ Small daily habits add up to long-term protection. Prevention is always better than treatment.

🩺🔍 Preventing Stones Starts With Understanding YOUR Risk 🔍🩺

Kidney stone prevention isn’t one-size-fits-all. To protect your kidneys properly, it’s important to understand what type of stones you form and why. This is where medical evaluation makes all the difference.

Here’s what your doctor can do 👇

🧪 1. Stone Analysis
If you’ve passed a stone or had one removed, analysing it in the lab reveals the exact type — calcium oxalate, uric acid, cystine, or others.
This guides targeted prevention.

📦 2. 24-Hour Urine Testing
A detailed test that measures chemicals such as calcium, oxalate, uric acid, citrate, sodium, and volume.
It helps identify your unique risk factors.

🎯 3. Tailored Treatment
Based on your results, your doctor may recommend:
• Dietary adjustments
• Increased fluids
• Medications such as thiazides, allopurinol, or potassium citrate

✨ Prevention works best when it’s personalised. Don’t guess — test.

💊🚫 Think Twice Before Taking Supplements 🚫💊

Not all vitamins are harmless — in fact, some can raise your risk of kidney stones.

⚠️ Vitamin C Warning:
High-dose Vitamin C supplements (especially over 1000 mg daily) can increase oxalate levels in your urine — which may lead to stone formation.

✅ Better choice:
Get your Vitamin C naturally from fruits and vegetables like oranges, strawberries, kiwis, and peppers.
Only take supplements if prescribed by your doctor.

✨ Remember: more isn’t always better — especially when it comes to kidney health.

🍋💧 Citrate: Your Natural Kidney Stone Shield 💧🍋

Citrate is one of your kidneys’ best friends — it helps prevent crystals from clumping together to form stones. The good news? You can boost your citrate levels naturally!

Here’s how 👇

✅ Drink lemon water regularly — citrus fruits are rich in natural citrate.
✅ Eat more fruits and vegetables — they make your urine less acidic, helping to stop stone formation.
💊 Medical option: If you’re prone to recurrent stones, your doctor may prescribe potassium citrate to give extra protection.

✨ Natural or medical, citrate plays a key role in keeping your kidneys stone-free.

🚶‍♂️ WALK LONGER, LIVE LONGER

It’s not just about how many steps you take — but how you take them.

A new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine followed more than 33,000 adults for nearly 10 years.
Those who took fewer than 8000 steps per day but did their walking in continuous bouts of 15 minutes or more had a much lower risk of dying than those who took the same number of steps in short bursts.

💡 Longer walks = stronger hearts and longer lives.
Even among people who walked less than 5000 steps daily, those who did it in longer bouts cut their risk of death from 5% to under 1%!

👟 So next time you go for a stroll, aim for 15 minutes of steady walking — your heart and your future self will thank you.

📱 Health apps and fitness watches can now track “walking bouts” — not just step counts.
Why not set a “bout goal” today?

⚖️💪 A Healthy Weight = Healthier Kidneys 💪⚖️

Carrying extra weight isn’t just hard on your joints — it also puts extra strain on your kidneys.
Obesity and metabolic syndrome can increase the risk of kidney stones by altering how your body processes calcium, uric acid, and other minerals.

Here’s how to protect your kidneys 👇

✅ Stay active: aim for regular exercise, even brisk walking or light workouts.
🥗 Eat balanced meals: focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
💧 Stay hydrated: good hydration supports kidney function and helps prevent stones.

✨ Small, consistent lifestyle changes = long-term kidney protection.

📣 Important Patient Alert: Beware “Electrolyte Supplements” if You Have Reduced Kidney Function

As a urologist, I often see patients with declining renal function who assume “electrolyte supplements” or high-salt sports drinks are benign. The latest commentary from Medscape emphasises that innovative electrolyte products may be harmful rather than helpful for individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

🔍 Key Take-home Points:
• Patients with impaired kidney filtration (reduced eGFR) may not handle large sodium or potassium loads the way healthy kidneys do.
• While electrolytes are essential, more is not always better. Supplements or high-salt beverages marketed as “healthy” for exercise or wellness may accelerate kidney damage if renal excretion is compromised.
• Lifestyle and diet remain first-line: moderate salt intake, watch fluid volumes, and avoid “auto-supplementing” without guidance from your nephrology/urology team.
• If you’re managing CKD or are under care for renal impairment, ask your clinician about which electrolytes you need (e.g., potassium, magnesium) — and which you should limit.
• Encourage patients: “Read the label → Talk to your kidney doctor or dietician → Don’t assume ‘natural’ = safe.”

📌 Suggested Patient Messaging (can be posted to your practice’s page):

“If you have known reduced kidney function or are under evaluation for CKD, please avoid self-selecting high-salt or electrolyte supplement drinks unless prescribed. Always discuss with your specialist first. Too much sodium or potassium can place extra stress on your kidneys.”

💡 Why this matters to your practice:
1. Enhances your role as a trusted specialist guiding safe wellness behaviours.
2. Reinforces the message that generic “health” products are not always suitable for patients with kidney risk.
3. Strengthens patient education — reduces misconception and potential harm from over-the-counter supplements.

🍖🍬 Protein & Sugar: Keep It Balanced for Kidney Health 🍬🍖

Too much of certain foods — especially animal protein and added sugars — can increase your risk of kidney stones. Here’s how to strike the right balance 👇

🥩 Animal Protein:
High intakes of red meat, poultry, eggs, and seafood can raise uric acid levels and lower urinary citrate — both of which promote stone formation.

🍭 Added Sugars:
Sugary drinks, sweets, and processed foods (especially those high in fructose) increase kidney stone risk.

🌿 Better Choices:
✅ Moderate your animal protein intake.
✅ Limit added sugars and soft drinks.
✅ Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and plant-based proteins.

✨ A balanced diet supports both kidney and overall health.

🌟 Exciting news for heart health! 🌟 SGLT2 inhibitors are revolutionizing care for seniors, especially those with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular issues. These innovative medications are 🛡️ lowering heart failure hospitalizations and cardiovascular deaths, while also protecting kidney function in heart attack patients. 🧡

🔹 Seniors (65+) benefit significantly with improved heart function, thanks to reduced oxidative stress and inflammation. Even very elderly patients (>75) are experiencing reduced mortality! 💪

🔹 Though caution is needed for frail elderly at risk for volume depletion, the advantages usually outweigh the risks.
