April is C-section Awareness Month. It is absolutely possible to successfully breastfeed after a C-section, especially when you have a few tips at the ready.
(1) Early initiation of breastfeeding makes use of feeding reflexes to kickstart milk production, especially in that first "golden hour" after birth.
(2) Skin-to-skin, or Kangaroo Mother Care, allows self-latching, encourages feeding behaviours, and helps to regulate your baby's heart rate, blood pressure, and temperature. It also promotes bonding and oxytocin release (the "feel good" hormone that also helps with milk let-down)
(3) During birth, hormonal changes take place that prompt milk production. This may be slightly delayed in C-sections. Have patience, focus on bonding with baby, and offer plenty of opportunities to feed.
(4) Breastfed babies should be fed on demand. This means following their hunger and satiety cues, not a strict schedule. When baby wants to latch, allow him/her to.
(5) Breast stimulation and milk removal prompts increased milk production. Offer plenty of breast stimulation (massage, hand expressing, breastfeeding, nuzzling, skin-to-skin) to facilitate this process.
