Every November 14, World Diabetes Day is commemorated to raise awareness about diabetes, it's prevention and it's management.

Diabetes is a chronic health condition that occurs when the body cannot effectively regulate blood sugar levels. There are two main types of diabetes; type 1 and type 2. Both types of diabetes can lead to high blood sugar levels which, if left uncontrolled, can cause serious health complications affecting various organs and systems.

It was created by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The theme for World Diabetes Day 2023 is 'Access to Diabetes Care.'

Each year from the 12 - 20 October, World Bone and Joint Week is observed to educate the public about musculoskeletal (bone and joint) conditions. As a leading cause of chronic pain and physical disability worldwide, bone and joint diseases affect a good portion of our population in the form of arthritis, osteoporosis; back, knee and hip pain; and muscle and ligament injuries etc.

This week is designed to raise awareness about prevention, disease management and treatment. In many cases, age - related degeneration of the body’s musculoskeletal system is a significant contributing factor in the development of bone and joint disease.

Having said that, bone and joint disease does not have to be inevitable. If you are suffering from bone or joint pain, you don’t have to live with the discomfort; seek medical attention immediately!

It's National Kidney Awareness Week!

This serves as a reminder to prioritise the health of our kidneys and to consider making lifestyle changes to better support this.

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs that filter our blood. They are a part of our urinary system and filter approximately 189 litres of fluid every day. During this process they remove waste which leaves our body as urine.

The estimated number of people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) globally is approximately 844 million. With high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity being so prevalent, this puts a strain on our kidneys and increases the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and renal failure.

For more information consult your medical practitioner.
