🦴 Cervical Facet Syndrome & Chiropractic Care — What You Should Know

Neck pain is often caused by irritation of the small joints in the neck called facet joints. This condition, known as cervical facet syndrome, can develop from poor posture, stress, injury, or everyday wear and tear.

✨ Common symptoms:
• Neck stiffness and pain
• Pain when turning or looking up
• Headaches starting at the base of the skull
• Shoulder or upper back discomfort

💆‍♀️ How chiropractic treatment helps:
✔️ Gentle spinal adjustments to improve joint movement
✔️ Soft tissue therapy to reduce muscle tension
✔️ Mobility and strengthening exercises
✔️ Posture and ergonomic correction for long-term relief

✅ The goal is not just pain relief — but restoring movement, improving posture, and preventing recurrence.

🌿 Self-care tips:
• Maintain good posture (avoid “text neck”)
• Take movement breaks every 30–45 minutes
• Perform simple neck strengthening exercises
• Use proper pillow support while sleeping

Early management can prevent chronic neck pain and headaches. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional for assessment and individualized care.

🚨 OCCIPITAL PAIN, HEADACHES WON'T GO AWAY?

Occipital nerve compression, known as occipital neuralgia, causes severe, throbbing, or electric-shock-like pain starting at the skull base and spreading up the head to the forehead or behind the eye, often triggered by touch. It's caused by irritation or injury to the occipital nerves, often from neck trauma (like whiplash), tight muscles, arthritis, or tumors, leading to symptoms like scalp tenderness, dizziness, and migraines.

Treatments range from at-home care (heat/cold, anti-inflammatories) and physical therapy to nerve blocks and, sometimes, surgery to decompress the nerve.

➡️ Symptoms of Occipital Nerve Compression

• Pain Quality: Sudden, sharp, shooting, throbbing, or burning pain.

• Pain Location: Starts at the base of the skull and radiates to the scalp, behind the eyes, and sometimes to the shoulder.

• Triggers: Brushing hair, resting the head on a pillow, or neck movements can cause intense pain.

• Other Sensations: Scalp tenderness, numbness, or tingling.

➡️ Causes

• Trauma: Head or neck injuries, whiplash, or concussions.

• Muscle Tension: Tight neck muscles compressing nerves.

• Spinal Issues: Osteoarthritis (especially in the upper spine), disc disease, tumors, or gout.

• Other: Diabetes, infections, or unknown causes.

➡️ Treatment Options

• Home Care: Heat/cold therapy, over-the-counter pain relievers, gentle neck stretches.

• Physical Therapy: Massage, exercises to relax and strengthen neck muscles.

• Medications: Muscle relaxants, prescription anti-inflammatories.

• Nerve Blocks: Injections of anesthetic/steroids near the nerves for pain relief.

• Advanced Treatments: Occipital nerve stimulation (implanted device) or decompression surgery (rarely).

➡️ When to See a Doctor

Seek medical help for unusual, sharp head/neck pain, especially if it feels like electric shocks, is persistent, or is accompanied by light sensitivity or dizziness, as it can mimic migraines.

This is my story: Dr. Saisha Naransammy, Chiropractor

From a young age, I was academically inclined, growing up in a humble and spiritually rooted home where my family instilled in me the values of perseverance, discipline, compassion, and faith. My grandparents, with whom I spent much of my childhood because their home was close to all my schools, played an instrumental role in shaping my character. Their love grounded me, while my parents taught me resilience and strength. I have always remained humble, never forgetting where I come from or the people who shaped me.

I loved school—from Montessori right through high school—and along the way, I received various accolades and awards that reflected my dedication. Community service became a natural extension of who I was, nurturing my desire to help others. Animals, too, have always held a special place in my heart, and caring for them became another way for me to express compassion.

My patients often ask me why I chose chiropractic, and the truth is that my career path was a beautiful blend of chance, purpose, and divine guidance. At first, I planned to become a chartered accountant, but circumstances nudged me to choose a broad-spectrum course. During a life-orientation assignment, a sudden opportunity arose to observe physiotherapy, sparking a deep interest in the medical field. While my two closest friends ultimately pursued accounting, I applied for chiropractic—a highly competitive program with 750 applicants vying for only 42 spaces—and I was accepted. From that moment, I knew I was exactly where I was meant to be.

My journey, however, has not been without profound hardship. In 2010, my father was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. He passed away in March 2011, and later that same year, I lost my maternal grandfather. My grandmother passed away in 2007. These losses were devastating, but my mother remained my anchor, and my faith—guided by Lord Ganesha, Shiva Shakti, and the divine energies that hold my heart—carried me through. God has always been at the centre of everything I do, guiding every milestone, decision, and step in my journey.

In 2012, I moved to the West Rand, reuniting with my beloved dog after six years, and eventually opened my own chiropractic practice. Every achievement has been a reflection of the encouragement my family gave me: my father’s words, “You can do it, Momo,” my grandfather’s “Leave it to Baba,” and my grandmother’s “Never give up and be in the top 10.” I continue to persevere for them, carrying their wisdom and love into every aspect of my life.

My commitment to excellence was formally recognised when I became a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society, which celebrates the top 15% of students who excel academically in their degree. This honour reaffirmed that perseverance, faith, and humility are powerful forces.

Today, as a chiropractor, I live with purpose: helping people heal, caring for animals with the same tenderness I had since childhood, and honouring God in all that I do. My journey is a testament to resilience, divine timing, and the love of a family whose guidance continues to light my path.

I would like to thank all those that were on this journey with me. Thank you to all my patients, family, friends and strangers for your kind words, motivation, encouragement, support and referrals.

I greatly appreciate it
