Taking care of your wellness every day is crucial in South Africa, where nearly 60% of adults are affected by lifestyle-related health issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. These conditions contribute to the country’s high burden of non-communicable diseases. By prioritising daily wellness—through balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and stress management—you can significantly reduce the risk of chronic illness, improve your quality of life, and ease pressure on South Africa’s healthcare system.

Because your health matters — to you, to your family, and to your future.

At CompCare, we believe wellness should be part of your every day. That’s why all our members get access to uWellness™️ via the Universal.one App for CompCare members — your gateway to personalised health tools, support, and motivation to live life well.

In today’s digital world, children are exposed to screens from an early age — whether for learning, entertainment, or communication. While technology brings many benefits, excessive screen time has raised growing concerns, especially regarding eye health and vision.

How Excessive Screen Time Affects Vision:
Extended screen use can lead to Digital Eye Strain, a condition increasingly common in children. Symptoms may include:
Blurred or double vision
👓 Dry, itchy, or burning eyes
👓 Headaches or migraines
👓 Difficulty focusing
👓 Eye fatigue and discomfort
Children may not always express discomfort clearly, making regular check-ups and mindful screen habits essential.

The Bigger Picture
Children’s eyes are still developing. Excessive near-focused activities, like staring at screens for long periods, may also contribute to myopia (short-sightedness) — which is rising sharply worldwide and in South Africa.

Why not encourage your children to take:
🔴 Encourage regular breaks using the 10-20-30 rule: for every 10 minutes spent watching TV or playing on screens, children should spend 20 minutes playing outside and another 30 minutes engaging in activities like reading, drawing, or building blocks.
🔴 Promote outdoor play, which has been proven to help reduce the risk of developing myopia.
🔴 Set healthy screen time limits according to age-appropriate guidelines. The World Health Organization recommends:
 Ages 0–2: No screens (except video calls)
 Ages 2–5: Maximum 1 hour per day
 Ages 6 and up: Consistent limits and healthy balance
🔴 Stay alert to signs of eye strain and changes in vision to address potential issues early.

Let’s work together to promote long-term wellbeing — not just for today, but for life. Because your child’s health, including their eyesight, is worth protecting.

– How high blood pressure affects your mood

Hypertension affects both your body and mind, with people having high blood pressure 1.5 times more likely to experience depression and anxiety. But you can take positive steps to manage it and boost your wellbeing. Managing blood pressure helps improve mood and energy. In South Africa, many adults face this challenge, so it’s important to act early. To reduce blood pressure, try regular exercise, a balanced diet low in salt, and stress-relief techniques like meditation or deep breathing. Avoid smoking and limit alcohol. Regular check-ups help track your progress. CompCare Medical Scheme offers health screenings and wellness support to help you live healthier and happier.

At CompCare, we believe good health isn’t just about check-ups and prescriptions – it’s about living fully, staying active, and finding joy in experiences that nourish the body and mind.

August is one of the best times to explore South Africa. With mild weather, clear skies and breathtaking scenery, it’s the perfect opportunity to step outside, reset your routine, and prioritise your wellbeing.

Here are some experiences in our wonderful country that combine travel with real health benefits:

1️⃣ Whale Watching in Hermanus
Calm the nervous system and lower stress levels by spending quiet time near the ocean. Watching whales in their natural habitat is a powerful reminder of perspective and presence.
2️⃣ Adventure Sports in Cape Town
From hiking and kayaking to zip lining and paragliding – movement in nature improves cardiovascular health, boosts dopamine levels, and strengthens the body.
3️⃣ Hiking in Blyde River Canyon
Fresh air, moderate exercise, and spectacular views all support physical endurance and mental clarity. Time in nature is proven to reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality.
4️⃣ Soaking in Riemvasmaak Hot Springs
Thermal water therapy helps reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, and ease joint pain. It’s also a natural way to relax and restore balance.
5️⃣ Exploring Hogsback Forests
Walking through indigenous forests enhances lung function, supports immune health, and encourages a mindful connection to your surroundings.
6️⃣ Taking a Day Tour in Cape Town or Johannesburg
Light physical activity through walking tours stimulates circulation, supports cognitive function, and immerses you in South Africa’s vibrant culture.
7️⃣ Visiting Addo Elephant National Park
Nature and wildlife have a proven calming effect on the brain. Exposure to green spaces and biodiversity improves emotional wellbeing and promotes positive mental health.

Your health is about more than treatment – it’s about the choices you make every day. Whether it’s a solo escape, a family trip, or a weekend getaway, August is the ideal time to explore, move, and take care of yourself.

And while you travel, rest assure, should any medical emergency happen, members of CompCare will be covered. Find out more about CompCare Medical Scheme at www.compcare.co.za.

August is Child Month – A Time to Celebrate Our Greatest Treasures.
Every child is a spark of possibility, a heartbeat of our future. Their laughter lights up our homes, their dreams stretch beyond the stars, and their well-being is a reflection of the society we’re building.

At CompCare, we believe that protecting their health is protecting our tomorrow.

That’s why we’ve made children’s health a priority in our benefit design — so parents and caregivers can rest easier knowing their little ones are covered, cared for, and cherished.

From preventative care to early interventions and essential treatments.

This Child Month, let’s honour them by giving them what they truly deserve:

• Love
• Protection
• Opportunity
• Health

Because when children thrive, we all rise.
