Join Michelle Weber on the 19th of February 2023, for an open water training clinic at in Franschhoek.

In this 5 hour workshop for intermediate and advanced swimmers, I’ll be teaching my fundamental open water techniques for you to elevate your swimming skills and how to prepare for your first Robben Island crossing.

My open water experience comes from competing for South Africa for the last 11 years where I’ve been 17x National Open Water Champion, crossed the English Channel in the fastest South African female time, competed at the last two Olympic Games, won the Junior World Championships, won 3 Midmar Miles and currently hold the fastest female time for Robben Island in a wetsuit.
On the day, we’ll be covering drafting, sighting and the best stroke for open water swimming.

The days program will run as follows:

1.How to train for your first Robben Island crossing and what to expect on event day
2. Open Water Techniques and Training
3. Shoulder Rehab and Recovery
4. A 1.6km or 3km Training Swim
5. Ended of with a Q&A, light lunch and social

A great cause NOT TO BE MISSED! SIGN UP NOW for the next Sweat for Dementia] awareness campaign in . 🏊🏾‍♀️ 🚴🏻 🏃🏻‍♀️

We initially began raising funds for our mom's dementia care, but now we are committed to helping towards wider dementia care, awareness, support and in particular awareness for homeless people with dementia. We will be raising funds for DementiaSA and Franschhoek Hospice.

A few of us who are again now UNFIT are going to get into gear and train to swim 1.6 km, mountain bike 65 km, and run 21 km in Franschhoek to raise the money.

The 2021 event was a great day and enjoyed by all and we look forward to another fun day sweating for a great cause.

ALL of the funds raised will go towards the local Hospice and DementiaSA with the hopes of a greater awareness campaign.
When you make a donation it will be split equally among the above recipients, unless you specify a recipient.

It occurred to me that if I left my mom on a street for a night she would be confused and seem mad to people and likely be mistreated and cast aside. I am worried about how many homeless people out there have been thrown out or cast aside as people don’t know that they have dementia or how to look after them or who to call.

We hope that this awareness campaign will contribute to helping those who cannot help themselves, and enabling those who can help to do so.

The second Franschhoek Chamber Music and Art Festival with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra musicians and international artists will take place from 23 – 26 February 2023.

Following the success of the inaugural world-class festival in February this year, which proved to be a highlight of the town’s calendar, the organisers have increased the number of concerts from 10 to 11, including two global stars, the violinist Priya Mitchell and pianist Dirk Mommetz. Other local stars are pianists Esthea Kruger and Nina Schumann and singer Lynelle Kenned, as well as the CPO’s guest concertmasters Farida Bacharova and Suzanne Martens.

Nic Barrow, FCMF chairman and co-founder with his wife Ferda, says that the town, a drawcard for international visitors, embraced the festival, which also includes art exhibitions, so warmly that people were asking at the close of the first festival when the next would be held.

The art exhibition displaying various media features guest artist Jan Vermeiren and contemporary artists Andrea-Desmond Smart, Henk Scholtz, Johannes du Plessis, Jacqueline Crewe-Brown, Kim Tracey, Abe Opperman, Jaco Sieberhagen, Andre Stead and Vuyisa Potina as well as a selection from Bridge House school students.

Highlights of the festival include the Trout Quintet by Schubert, Dvorák’s American Quartet, the Mendelssohn Octet, a Brahms Sextet, Erik Dippenaar and a Baroque concert, all the Bach cello suites, the Clarinet Concerto by Mozart with CPO principal clarinet Fèroll-Jon Davids and the CPO, and Priya Mitchell performing in the Beethoven Violin Concerto in a version reduced for strings and timpani.

All the performances will be in the Dutch Reformed Church, with its fine acoustics for chamber music. The church is located in the centre of the town, with ample shaded parking nearby.

Celebrated electric cellist Carol Thorns will be performing a lunchtime concert at the Gallery, Grande Provence. Carol will be joined by violinist Galina Juritz and vocalist Zami Mdingi from CODA Africa. The concert will feature music from her brand new album, Sanctuary.
