It has been 2 years now since the passing of my brother, it's no secret that he took his own life after being disciplined and to find out that he was under the influence of drugs when he decided to take his own life. He was just a teenager who got mixed up with the wrong crowd. It's a pity that as much as we can advise our siblings and children about peer pressure and dangers of mixing with the wrong people and drugs there's not much we can do when out of site. But with awareness and daily teachings I believe we can fight this horrible epidemic slowly but surely.

WHOONGA or NYAOPE

Whoonga or Nyaope is a drug that has allegedly come into widespread use in South Africa in 2010.
There are differing reports regarding the exact ingredients of whoonga. Some reports mention only dagga (ma*****na) being used as a base while others say it is he**in or even a cocktail of he**in and crystal m**h and that dagga is merely smoked together with it rather than being the base drug. The base drug is stretched with various other substances that may include rat poison and powdered detergents and in particular anti-retroviral drugs used for AIDS treatment. However, AIDS experts point out that the ingredients of the anti-retroviral drugs are unlikely to cause the whoonga high and users might simply fool themselves in that regard. Also, a laboratory analysis of samples of the drug failed to detect any anti-retroviral drugs in its makeup.]According to some experts, whoonga is essentially just a rebranding of older he**in based drugs like sugars:
The drug dealers add all sorts of stuff to the he**in, the primary ingredient, just to increase the mass of the drug when it’s sold and make the he**in go further. A lot of the stuff has no effect and users have no idea what’s going in.
The drug is described as highly addictive. Users feel heavy cravings even on the first day of use. It is also dangerous, because it reduces both heart and lung function. In overdose, heart and lung function reduction becomes fatal. Withdrawal symptoms reportedly involve both craving and pain, which are temporarily relieved by fresh doses of the drug.
The anti-retroviral drugs allegedly used to make whoonga are those distributed in the area to patients with HIV. The claimed major source of the anti-retrovirals appears to be robbery of HIV patients. There are media reports which claim HIV patients are being mugged for their pills as they leave the clinics where they obtain them. Reports also claim that some patients sell their HIV medications and that some corrupt health workers may be selling the anti-retrovirals illegally into the whoonga market.
Reports indicate that a whoonga addict needs several doses a day, and users are typically too poor to afford the drug out of their legal income. Addicts therefore turn to crime to raise the money for their supply. There are reports that claim whoonga addicts attempt to become HIV-positive, since anti-retrovirals are distributed to poor HIV patients free of charge.

Make nyaope freely available, like ARVs
By Sowetan Reporter | Aug 08, 2015 | COMMENTS [ 13 ]

The illegal drug nyaope, which is devastating communities, should be legalised and a replacement drug to treat addiction be made available at all healthcare centres, just like ARVs.

Yesterday Professor Jannie Hugo of the department of family medicine at the University of Pretoria said on the sidelines of a press conference on the effects of substance abuse that these measures would make the drug addiction manageable.

The drug, which contains he**in, dagga, ARVs and rat poison, has led to many social ills.

Last week Sowetan reported that HIV-positive people who use the drug were putting their lives at risk because they often stopped taking treatment and did not eat, while the substance devastated their health.

"Nyaope contributes to the spread of TB and HIV. Addicts do not care about taking treatment. It has the potential to devastate entire communities," said Hugo.

"Legalise the drug. I am not apologetic about it. I know there might be other effects but we work with nyaope-addicted children and I am telling you, it would be better if this thing was legal."

Hugo said nyaope was impossible to manage and should be supplied and taxed like ci******es. He argued that it must be treated with the same priority as HIV. He said a replacement drug to treat nyaope addiction should be made available at healthcare centres, like ARVs

"Nyaope is more detrimental than HIV. Legalise nyaope so that you can control it. Then those boys will not have to commit crime. We need to focus on controlling it but now the focus is on the crime part of it."

Hugo said the focus should not be on rehabilitation only "as it is not a solution for the scale of problems we have. It is a waste of time if it is not used with replacement drugs."

Hugo said a person who takes the replacement drugs will not have cravings. He said they plan to get funding from the City of Tshwane's budget on drugs to fund the replacement drug for addicts.

But the SA Depression and Anxiety Group said such a move would create more problems.

"Legalising the drug will open up more problems. It will be accessible and lead to more people being addicted. More families will be helpless. It will have a negative impact on the work we do to help people," said operations director Cassey Chambers.

Chambers added that treatment should be accessible while national health department spokesman, Joe Maila, said they were not considering legalising the drug.

The Facts on Nyaope/Whoonga

Nyaope, also known as whoonga, is a dangerous and highly addictive South African street drug. Nyaope is a fine white powder that is usually combined with ma*****na (dagga) and smoked.

It is not always clear what all of the ingredients of nyope are, and the ingredients may vary from place to place. But one thing is clear: Nyaope is made of a lethal combination of substances, which can include he**in, detergent powder, rat poison, and crushed anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs). ARVs are the medications used to treat patients with HIV.

Nyaope is relatively cheap - about R20 for one hit - and a person can become highly addicted after using the drug only once. A user will soon feel as if he needs several hits to make it through the day.

Nyaope first appeared in the townships around Durban in 2010, but is reportedly moving to impoverished areas around South Africa.

Nyaope is a serious threat to South Africas HIV-positive population. There have been reports of gangs robbing HIV/AIDS clinics in Soweto to obtain ARVs for making nyaope, as well as addicted users mugging ARV patients to obtain the drugs for themselves.

As with all street drugs, the best way to deal with nyaope is never, ever to try it. If you are addicted to nyaope, go to the nearest health clinic and find out how to enrol into a drug rehabilitation programme.
