International Radiology day…..8 November we celebrate the anniversary of the discovery of Xrays in 1895. Radiology day is used as a platform to raise public awareness of radiographic imaging and therapy.

Radiology is the medical discipline that uses medical imaging to diagnose and treat diseases within the bodies of animals and humans. A variety of imaging techniques such as X-ray radiography, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), nuclear medicine including positron emission tomography (PET), fluoroscopy, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are used to diagnose or treat diseases

We use this opportunity to honor those working with precise accuracy and save thousands of lives every year.

As we now return to ‘new normality’, I stand in awe remembering our community’s commitment and dedication through 4 waves of Covid19.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COVID-19 RAPID AND PCR TESTS?

1. Antigen test (frequently referred to as a rapid test). This test detects protein fragments specific to the Coronavirus. It can be done in a clinic, doctor’s office, or hospital.

Rapid tests are considered most accurate in a patient who is having symptoms of COVID-19. While the rapid test can get you results very quickly, the results may not always be accurate. In those who don’t have symptoms, the false negative rate — meaning my test is negative but I actually have the disease — can be as high as 50%.

2. PCR test. PCR swab testing is considered the “gold standard” in SARS-CoV-2 detection. This test actually detects RNA (or genetic material) that is specific to the virus and can detect the virus within days of infection, even those who have no symptoms. The test can be done in a clinic, hospital, or even in your car. Turnaround time is longer.

Current recommendation is to have a confirmation test performed (the PCR test) especially if you still have symptoms and have had a negative rapid test.

Covid19 Delta variant, wat weet ons….

1. Delta is nou vining besig on die mees algemene SARS- CoV-2 variant in die meeste van die lande te word, insluitend SA.

2. Daar is genoeg bewys dat Delta meer as dubbel sò oordragbaar is as al die vorige variante wat tans die rondte doen. Meer mense steek vinniger aan as met vorige Covid19 golwe.

3. Groot kommer heers dat vorige infeksie met die ander variante nie beskerming bied teen Delta nie. Her-infeksies is dus moontlik, en ‘n werklikheid.

4. Dit wil voorkom asof meer pasiente hospitalisasie nodig het na infeksie met die Delta variant.

5. Daar is beslis meer infeksies en sieker pasiënte in jonger ouderdoms groepe.

6. Dit blyk dat inentings met die vaksienes (Pfizer, Astra Zeneca & JJ) beskeming verleen teen simptomatiese siekte en opnames in die hospitaal.

Voorstelle vir elke gesin in dié tye:

Gradeer jou masker op na ‘n chirurgiese een of ekwivalent aan “N95” as jy gesonheidprobleme het. Nou, meer as ooit….

1. Distansieer so ver as moonlik van ander mense, definitief meer as die voorgeskrewe 1.5 meter.

2. Plaas jou en jou familie in ‘n aangepaste vlak 5 inperking – bly tuis so ver as moontlik en gaan net uit om die noodsaaklike te doen.

3. Registreer vir die vaksiene wanneer dit jou b***t is en kry dit so gou as moontlik.

4. Leef en eet gesond, oefen gereeld en bly moedig sodat jou immuunstelsel optimaal kan funksioneer.

Please be safe and extra careful this next few weeks. We are experiencing very high number of Covid19 positive cases in our area.

Our practice’s positivity rate is 21% and the younger population (10-14 years old) is especially vulnerable for contracting the virus.

The local hospitals are also taking strain with very ill admissions, and symptoms do tend to appear faster and mainly consist of head aches, severe lethargy and fatigue, with painful muscles and sore throat.

This strain in the 3e wave seems more contagious, with whole families contracting the disease.

Please mask up, sanitise and stay away from public places and gatherings as far as possible.

With the theme ‘Nursing the World to Health' today, and on Florence Nightingale’s birthday, we celebrate the core of patient care in our competent team of nurses at Life Suikerbosrand hospital.

Throughout the Covid19 pandemic, they still manage to serve every patient in dignity and with lots of empathy and love.

Hats off to our wonderful team of nurses, from casualty right through to intensive care and theatre units. You’re amazing!
