Here are some of the changes parents and teachers can make in the environment to help kids with auditory processing difficulties listen and learn more effectively

1. Preferred seating

2. Use visual cues
Encourage your child’s teacher to use visuals in instruction, and be sure your child is looking at you when you give directions or convey other important information.

3. Emphasize key words
One of the things we advise teachers to do with these kids is to significantly slow their rate of speech and use emphasis on key words, to bring attention to important pieces of information by the way they’re talking.

4. Give kids a heads up when something important is coming
It could be something as simple as, say: Are you ready? or Here’s the thing.

5. Help with sequencing. Use words that trigger or help a child to sequence events. Using words like first, second, then, last help kids follow sequences, and teaching them to us these transition words in writing or telling a story helps them to organize their thoughts and their language.

6. Assistive technology
For kids who need extra help following the teacher’s voice in a noisy classroom, there is technology that can help. The student wears headphones that reduce background noise, and the teachers wears a microphone wirelessly connected to his headset.

Your child passes a hearing test, but is diagnosed with auditory processing disorder (APD). How is it possible to have an auditory disorder when you don’t have a hearing impairment?

Auditory Processing Disorder

Auditory processing disorder (also known as central auditory processing disorder or CAPD) is a condition that makes it hard for kids to recognize subtle differences between sounds in words.

Typically the brain processes sounds seamlessly and almost instantly. Most people can quickly interpret what they hear. But with APD, some kind of glitch delays or “scrambles” that process. To a child with APD, “Tell me how the chair and the couch are alike” might sound like “Tell me how a cow and hair are like.”

Marothi Nthabiseng-Basadi Mohlabe, thank you for giving away your free consultation to someone who needed it. Thank you for shinning a light in Hope's life.

Today I had my first home visit. I assessed Hope's ears and continued to run an OAE test on her. My heart is completely overwhelmed on how well this mommy is looking after her special child.

This is why I do what I do. To meet people like Hope's mom who without knowing it inspire you to keep on fighting the struggle that is access to health care for ALL.

Today for the first time since starting this journey, I cried on the way home. My heart is full and my spirit is even fuller.

Take Home Message

Ear wax helps lubricate and waterproof the skin along the ear canal, while also keeping certain bacteria from overgrowing.

The ear is already self-cleaning Our ears slowly push earwax out as it accumulates, aided by the movement of our jaw.

A real-life horror tale that’s gotten renewed media attention this week is sure to make you think twice about digging earwax out of your ears. An Australian woman says she developed a life-threatening infection that ate away parts of her skull after years of swabbing her ears with cotton. But how ...
