When we talk about Osteoarthritis, the first thing that comes to mind is "motion is lotion"!! 😆

The body needs movement in order to lubricate its joints and stay healthy. A combination of endurance and gentle strength exercises gives the best results.

Endurance exercise (such as walking, swimming, tai chi, water aerobics, cycling, aerobics) can result in reduced pain and improved physical function. Other benefits of endurance exercise may include improved self-confidence, quality of life, muscle strength and mental/emotional health.

Starting slowly and build up over time. Let's get moving! 🚶‍♀️🚴‍♀️

Resistance exercise (such as body-weight exercises, and using weights and resistance bands) can result in improved muscle strength, reduced pain and stiffness and improved function.

Better strength reduces undue strain on joints, thereby slowing the progression of degeneration. It is recommended that a structured resistance training programme is completed 3 times a week on non-consecutive days.

If you would like any advice on how to get going, or to set up a structured routine for you, please contact us. Consistency is key. Therefore, let us help keep you motivated and moving!

What can we do to treat osteoarthritis? 😀

It may seem counterintuitive for us to encourage more exercise to treat “wear and tear”. Surely this will make it worse?

The answer is NO. Exercise, at any age, is essential for joint health. Incorrect biomechanics due to tightness and weakness in muscles, results in undue stress on joints and therefore accelerates the degeneration process.

Regular moderate- to vigorous-intensity exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of developing OA. Exercise results in positive changes to the joint cartilage, synovial fluid nutrition and distribution, and quality and strength of muscles surrounding the joint. These changes improve shock absorption, and thereby reduce the forces transmitted through the joint cartilage.

Follow us this month for advice on how to treat Osteoarthritis through exercise.

What is osteoarthritis? 🤔

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common joint diseases as well as one of the most common chronic diseases. Most people over the age of 60 show signs of OA in at least 1 joint. It is degeneration of the joint due to “wear and tear”.

In the initial stages, patients experience pain when placing pressure on the moving joint. Over a period of time, patients start to experience resting pain and joint swelling. The patients’ activities become more and more restricted by this pain and swelling. This decrease in physical activity results in decreased strength, fitness and quality of life.

What causes osteoarthritis?

OA is related to:
Age
Overweight/Obesity
Weak muscle function

➡️ Gentle exercise is the key to getting your joints more mobile. Starting slow and building up over time.

We hope you are staying warm and well! 😀

As many of our patients are well over the age of 60, and the winter months seem to bring with them stiffer and more painful joints, we would like to take the opportunity to chat about osteoarthritis. Follow us for the month of July to get tips and advice on all you need to know about Osteoarthritis.
