Muscle Fasciculation- what does it mean?

Fasciculation is the rapid, involuntary “twitching” that is often seen during a physio session on your horse. Most noticeable over the back, but can be seen in other areas as well.
Fasciculation is commonly caused by palpation of a trigger point or spasm.
When a muscle is very tight or in a spasm, the nerves that control that muscle are not able to function normally, and often become “hyper reactive”. These muscle fasciculations are the nerves responding to the pressure stimulus.
BUT! Fasciculations are not a bad thing! They are an indication of muscle dysfunction, along with the overall tone of the muscle and the horse’s response, but the fasciculation also lets us know that the muscle is responding, and releasing tension. Usually, by the end of a session, these twitches should be almost or entirely resolved, and the muscle will feel softer and more relaxed.

Back in the swing of things for 2026!

Many horses benefit greatly from a physio session when coming out of their break, before getting back into full training. While holidays are vitally important for our horses, many start out a little tight and sore after a break, as a result of less movement, and certain areas weakening without consistent exercise and training.
Book a session now and make sure your horse is starting out the year on the best possible foot!

RH Veterinary Physio’s Grey Street came to play today 😈
With less prep than we would have liked, and after fine tuning a few things, this was an outing and really just to have a canter round a track.
Streets had other plans, coming home with a 3rd and a 1st in the 1.20m at KPC’s FEI Challenge!
Well done .brown.equestrian_ for putting in all the work and effort you have. The boy is on TOP form 🤩
